My almost-1-year-old koss portapro phones recently starts to sound broken in bass- the lowest bass frequesny      makes some static sounds instead of low-freq' sound. when I turned 30Hz off (0%) via my sound card I couldn't hear the static sounds anymore.
I tried plugging them to another computer and they made the same issue.

Is it the time to use the warranty of this product?
why did it happen? I didn't misuse them any way. how can I prevent this to happen again?

Take the pads off and blow into the drivers. pull out any loose hair that might have ended up in there and then re-test the sound. Dirty drivers are a very common problem with these headphones.

This, and test your cord for safety.
 
Otherwise, how much is it? $5 with the can to Koss and replacements in the mail?
 
I never have a problem with my Portapros. BTW: Wearing them at the moment, oddly enough.
