Hifiman dropping a closed back??? I can already see a wave of closed backs coming our way.. good!!
@TeamHiFiMAN Do you think this will go for $250 or $200 by Black Friday? I am wondering how long I should wait.
Is it necessary to ask this on the launch day?
@TeamHiFiMAN Will the R10 knock-off cups fit Sundara closed version? Seems like it would be a nice upgrade. How much for the R10 knock-off cups?
And could I just buy the cups and install them on my Sundara?
That's not exactly how closed backs work...these cups are not easily removable by looks of it.

I think $399 is a great price on a Closed Back SUNDARA -- assuming it really does match, more or less, the performance of the open-back variation.

By loose and floppy, I assume you mean the fit? Because I would not describe the sound of the R7DX as that. But the R9, yes.Now I’m glad I waited to pull the trigger on the dynamic R9, which I feared would be as loose and floppy as the R7DX. I love my Ananda, which shares this same headband and fits very well on my head - not too loose, not too clampy.
I’ve never owned the Sundara, but figured it was mostly redundant since I have the HE-560 v1, Ananda, and HE-6se v2, but a closed back Sundara is a definite buy for me!
I have a couple of Denon wooden cups from a mod, and I will hold them on the backs of my Sundara and see if I can garner an impression of what the closed Sundara might sound like.

Curious to how it compares to the Aeon Closed at that price point.
I've tried both the Sundaras and have the Aeons. I did like the sound of the sundaras but the shape of the cans did hurt my head.

Are these only wired or can they be used wireless with the Bluemini?
Are these only wired or can they be used wireless with the Bluemini? The latter would be ridiculous useful! We are very excited to introduce our new product Sundara Closed-Back!
New Model Adds Stealth Magnet Technology and Beechwood Ear Cups to Audiophile Favorite
The Sundara Closed-Back headphone (SRP: $399) is highlighted by elegant, hand-assembled beechwood ear cups that serve to isolate the listener from background noise and emphasize the natural bass response of the original recording. Designed by HIFIMAN engineers, the ear cups offer the dual benefits of exceptional sonics and stylish good looks.
A recent HIFIMAN creation, Stealth Magnet technology is an integral part of the headphone’s sonic output by significantly reducing reflections and diffractions that are detrimental to sound quality
Like the open-back version, the new Sundara Closed-Back features our ultra-thin Super Nano diaphragm, which is up to 80% thinner than diaphragms in more common headphones. The design results in an ultra-wide frequency response -- 6Hz-50kHz -- with sonic detail that reveals the fine points in well-recorded music.
Adds Dr. Bian: “Sundara is a Sanskrit term meaning ‘beautiful’ and ‘noble,’ both of which are accurate descriptions of the new headphone design, inside and out. Music lovers will enjoy the new Sundara Closed-Back as much if not more than the original open-back model.”
Specifications:
Frequency response:6Hz - 50kHz
Sensitivity: 98dB
Impedance: 20ohm
Weight: approx. 432g
Sundara over-ear planar headphones will be available from HIFIMAN dealers and our official online store in August.

It's a little hard to tell but I wonder if the ear pads are different from the angled ones on the open-back Sundara.

I do hope HFM maintain Sundara's neutral balance in their closed-back version. A little bit more bass extension (over Sundara Open) would be lovely!

The cups on my AKG K371 have just started quaking...
Yes, sorry, to be clear, I meant the physical fit -- I quite like the R7DX sonically, although it's better if I get a better seal, so even the physical fit itself can alter the sound, although I think it still sounds good even when loose, just not as good as it is when I push the cups in a little.By loose and floppy, I assume you mean the fit? Because I would not describe the sound of the R7DX as that. But the R9, yes.

I've never heard the R9, but I feared that it would likewise not fit me well -- I've come close to pulling the trigger on the R9 a few times since the price has been reduced to $369, but I think now I will wait for the Sundara Closed Back to be available.
I sure hope the Sundara Closed Back isn't just wood cups slapped onto the Sundara open back -- I hope they adjusted the tuning.
I doubt it -- the Sundara headband doesn't lend itself to a wire connecting the two cups and that's how the BlueMini works since it only goes into one side. I'd wager the Sundara Closed are just like Sundara open-back in how the cups are independently fed audio and thus can use simply balanced cables and don't need anything to connect between the two cups. Are these only wired or can they be used wireless with the Bluemini?
