Thanks all for your replies. Pity about the restrictions; looks like it will be a long wait. The LP6 would be my dream DAP, but the lack of a search function is a deal-breaker (can live without streaming, connectivity etc, but with a 20K+ track library, a search function is a must). Hopefully the next generation, whenever it's released, will have a search function.
Unless you're absolutely insistent upon R2R (in which case I would understand) I'd suggest looking at the E7 which has a working search function.

Though it doesn't have quite the analogue smoothness of the LP6 it's very close, and technical performance is perhaps a tad better.

If search function is a must, have a listen to the E7. Have you heard the LP6? If you have, then you will have some basis for comparison with the E7. :)

[Cross post from the E7 thread

Folks, LP just released a new FW, E7_V1.0.5_2024.5.20.rar, through its authorised dealers today. Once updated, the E7 should be at Firmware v. 1.0.5 dated 2024.5.12.

The WeChat translated FW notes are:

1. Fixed an issue where the ID3 info character string had a newline character in front of it.
2. Added Split Track Function for SACD DISC Images
3. Optimized decoding library and decoding thread
4. Supports DST decoding.

[cross post from the the LP E7 thread}

Just wanted to share with everyone this new article that Wan and the LP team were asked questions and answers were provided. Very informative stuff. :)

http://bbs.erji.net/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=2336083&extra=page=1

In in a series of 12 questions and answers, Wan provided the answers I think we are all interested in:

  1. What is the hierarachy and scope of each series that LP currently does and how does E7 fit within the range of LP DAPs?
  2. What is the reason for the E7 adopting a modular system?
  3. Why did you choose the AKM 4497 chip as the base for the first module for the E7?
  4. What challenges did you face in developing the AKM 4497 card for the E7?
  5. What is the role of the voltage regulation function of the LPF op amp and the reason for developing this technology?
  6. What is the thinking behind the E7 being equipped with BT but not wifi or streaming?
  7. What were the design considerations behind the E7?
  8. What do you think are the advantages and future applications of the self developed non-Android OS?
  9. Why does the E7 provide 3 different tuning options, while still providing the option of EQ?
  10. Why does the E7 have fewer accessories when the trend has been towards higher prices and luxury packaging?
  11. Is there any different in the FPGA used in the E7?
  12. Compared to other companies, how is product development in LP different and unique?
By the way, do NOT despair when you click on the link and it is in Chinese. Just press translate and you will get the English (or whatever language is your default) version,

Happy reading! :)

Brief impressions of the LP6Pro
This is my first exposure to an LP player. Having heard so much about the brand. A thank you to @Damz87 and Luxury & Precision for the Australian tour. It is now several years old but still a current model available to purchase for $3899US

First impressions: The tour unit came "as is" and is clearly labelled "Test sample, not for sale" on startup. It will be returned after the 2 week tour. My first thought was wow, this is a small player. Portable. Lighter than my SP2000 and perhaps even my m11Pro (stainless steel). In the age where every modern DAP is a monstrosity, this was a refreshing change.

There's no wi-fi. LP believe in sound quality first. Wi-fi introduces unnecessary noise and impediments to sound quality. Or so the Q&A above suggests.

Operating system comments:

The proprietary iOS is simple. Most intuitive and reminded me of the original iPod days of old. Copying music from my MacBook to the internal 64Gb storage was painfully slow. I would love to see a faster USB 3.x implementation and internal memory write speeds. It took almost 30 minutes to transfer <15Gb of FLAC files. Another improvement would be an improvement in human ergonomics or the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system. Some brands do this better than others where the interface just is intuitive and easy to use.

I would like to see a double tap to 'wake' the screen. edit: it can be toggled in the menu, thank you @Bosk

As my FLAC are purchased (by me) from the Qobuz music store, the Metadata was not an issue. Albums are sorted by alphabetical order and then by track number. I would not want to have thousands of tracks or albums as you have to manually scroll through each page. But then the transfer speed is also slow. Using an external storage card would probably be the preferred option.

Drivability and sound quality:

This small player packs a punch. I'm driving Spartacus and easier to drive IEM's with a volume wheel of <20 balanced.
With headphones Utopia is at v35 on the balanced 4.4. These are impressions and I am not volume matching. Just a comfortable listening level.

Whilst a portable amplifier and line out may further improve staging it is mostly unnecessary. The P6Pro will likely drive many harder to drive IEM's satisfactorily. I don't own at present to try this out though.

The R2R implementation is lovely.

Bass could be tighter, more dynamic on the Utopia but is more than adequate on the Spartacus and perhaps a DAP drivability limitation. Texture is great though.
There's an analogue warmth to the bass and low mids. Rich and musical. Staging is more intimate than the SP3000 with less air and seperation between instruments. It is not as hi-fi technical as the SP3000 nor Chord sounding as the Hugo2.

The very top end in treble extension is slightly recessed. The upper mids and lower treble region is still very well defined and pleasant. I'm not missing the treble on my Utopia 2022.

Those of you who like warm huggable sound will enjoy the R6Pro. But the overall sound is cohesive and enjoyable. It's a "close your eyes and enjoy the music" DAP.

I'm finding myself impressed what this small player is capable of.

Looking to swap my Cayin N8ii for a P6 Pro Black, really liked the tuning, but missed the opportunity to compare with N8ii, anyone had both for A/B? Would love to read some impressions.

And yeah if someone is willing to part with his / her P6 Pro Black I am around =)
