Ever just want to ride a wave of music devoid of voices? My favorite Metallica is when there's no lyrics. Like Orion and yes the Bass solo way back when Cliff was the bassist. What I am asking for is there anything similiar? Something powerful from a band that takes you up and throws you around?

Darth Beyer's rule!

Oh heck yes. I love me some nice hard rock/metal instrumentals! Some of my favorites are:
"Dialogue With The Stars" - In Flames
"Man Made God" - In Flames
"The Crusade" - Trivium

For a more acoustic feel:
"Patterns In The Ivy" - Opeth
"Pallar Andres Visa" - In Flames

And of course, the band Dream Theater are masters of instrumentals.

These bands/songs:

Pelican - "Autumn Into Summer"
Red Sparowes - "Our Happiest Days Slowly Began To Turn Into Dust"

Firstly, Spastic Ink and Behold... the Arctopus. I've yet to find an instrumental metal band that blows my mind like either of those two. Then again, if you want something like Metallica, you'll probably be overwhelmed and/or put off.

Gordian Knot, Vitalij Kuprij, Adagio, Canvas Solaris, Planet X, and various other Derek Sherinian discs have very nice instrumentals as well.

Dream Theater have two of my favorite instrumentals in 'Hell's Kitchen' and 'Erotomania'. Liquid Tension Experiment have a few good ones here and there, also.

In Flames' 'The Jester's Dance' is another one of my favorites.

Cynic's 'Textures' is probably my favorite instrumental track of all time.

TesseracT, Linear Sphere, Origin, Tandjent, and other bands of similar ilk have some truly intense instrumentals.. but may be way too over the top for you.

Jesters Dance by In Flames is simply killer! Though i have my own opinions on In Flames overall, their Jesters Race is good album and both instrumental and title-track are fantastic.

Frankenstein - The Edgar Winter Group

Not sure if I would call it heavy metal, but it warrents a suggestion anyway.

Cacophony - Speed Metal Symphony
Yngwie Malmsteen - Trilogy Suite Op. 5, Beethoven's 5th, Black Star, Overture 1492
Stratovarius - Stratovarius, Stratosphere, Speed of Light
Steve Vai stuff
Eric Johnson stuff too

A lot of the aforementioned stuff is awesome too.

Definitely give pelican a listen

Might tend a bit more toward "rock" than "metal," but the lines there are so blurred the distinction isnt really even worth making.

Does the band East West Blast Test count? They may be considered more "hardcore", but they do some MEAN instrumental work. No vocals at all - just instruments. They remind me greatly of Frank Zappa, actually, as they implement very unique examples of marimba and other percussion.

I'll allow it.

Man I really hate my X-Fi. Sounds so sterile. I need to build an htpc bad.
