If you only had $200 to spend on a headphone that you would keep for the rest of your life, what headphone would it be? Let's assume you can get whatever amp, source, ect. you want. Why would you want that particular headphone?

I'm not asking this question because I'm looking for headphones. This is more of just a curiosity of popular opinion.

My only experience with high-end headphones have been Grados... I've gone from SR-80's to SR-225's, which I think is the highest model you could get for under $200... so that's what I'll go with. They sound beautifully, and I could never give them away.

Sennheiser HD 580s with HD 600 grills.

Used UM2. Serves me anywhere, and I can honestly live the rest of my days with its sound...I just don't have to.

Well...that would depend...

If you have a good bass EQ (like, over +12 db)...EH350 no doubt.

Otherwise I'd probably say something from the HD5xx line.

Used SR-225's + HD414 pads. I just can't get enough of that Grado signature. Plus they're nearly indestructible which is a plus, especially considering my clumsiness.

Seeing as how im about to place an order on them, HD 580s with 600 cable, and grids if they are within the budget.

Although the K601 would be a very nice alternative, especially since they seem to be built better, making them more suitable to keep around for the rest of eternity.

sr-225.

but if i only had $200 to spend on headphones for the rest of my life, i'd get 3 pairs of sr-60's and take uber good care of each one.

Second place goes to DT880. It's a wonderful headphone with the right amplification; almost magical at times. Third place goes to the HD580, which is a bargain at $130. Upgrade the cables on that thing and it's quite a capable headphone. Again, the right amplification is required to bring it to the top.
