So I'm trying to buy a small bday gift and introduce a friend to the beautiful world of headfi, starting with budget audio (I want to smash his apple earphones) 
 
Genre: Soft Rock/Modern Rock (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
Budget: $20-$50
Sound: Something like Grado SR60/80, but in IEM form.
 
What options do I have?

I really like(d) my PK3's, which are earbud style (so more comfortable). I say 'liked' because for some weird reason the bass response pooped out, the right channel before the left.
