The internal amp is one of the best iBasso has produced. Powerful and yet able to articulate details in a delicate manner with a large soundstage that is layered.
So does the amp section of the DX100 blow the HP-P1's one away? I would like to read more comparisons between those two solutions: iDevice + HP-P1 vs. the DX100. And really am hoping iBasso fixes the gap-less issue.
As I don't own an HD800, I can't comment, except for the fact that the DX100 does have an EQ that is subtle but effective if there are some specific areas of the HD800 that need to be massaged. I should think that the power available should be more than adequate. Perhaps someone who owns both can make more specific comments regarding the synergy or lack thereof between the two.

Good, good, because I'm on the verge of giving into the HP-P1 + iPod temptation again... I've been holding off since the original DX100 announcement...
Honestly unless you are using crazy hungry cans which even the amp should be able to drive most to satisfaction, the amp is quite powerful as is. Its kinda an all in one solution and in those terms quite portable.
I am listening to some Grateful Dead, "Dead Set" disc 2, Row Jimmy, and I haven't heard it any better. I am using the Ultrasone Ed. 9 right now and the better the amplification, the better they sound. Actually, I haven't heard the Ed. 9 ever sound as good as they are right now.
I would love to see someone who has both the DX100 and HM801 or HM602 post a comparison on SQ.
In that the DX100 cannot function as a stand alone DAC like the Hifiman products...I think that would be of interest to many who are "on the fence" about buying it.
This unit costs more than HM801....is it that much better sonically? A detailed comparison would be nice.
However, on the cost side of things, don't forget that if you intend to use either unit portably (and let's face it, that's the whole point, otherwise one would just buy a desktop rig), then the 801 tends to need the 'Game' amp module to function with CIEMs, and that adds $200 to the 801.

Exactly. This is the big one that killed the 801 for me. If its a portable device is should be able to be used with portable IEMs and headphones which generally are sensitive. Paying an extra $200.00 for such a basic feature is a big no, no.
