I got a Denon AVR-2802 for free. Worth building a system around it?

So I recently came into the above mentioned receiver. I know it's pretty old (pretty sure from around 2003). Is it worth keeping and building a half decent system around? Does anyone have any suggestions as to amps, monitors? Thanks

Budget?
Are you looking at a 2.0 or 2.1 or 5.1 speaker setup?
What sources will you be connecting to the AVR-2802?
Going to get headphones to use with it?

I would like to go with a 2.1
I'm not sure what I'll use as my source yet. (just got this today)
Don't think I'll use headphones with It regularly, 90% speaker listening i'd say.
Budget is negligible at this point since i'm not looking to buy right away. But nothing super high end.

I have an Fiio X5, so maybe use that as the source

Your better off plugging the headphones straight into the FiiO X5. (12-Ohm to 250-Ohms)
If the headphones are more then 250-Ohms, then the receiver might be a better choice for driving the headphones.
If your looking at a 2.1 speaker setup, then the Denon AVR-2802 should do a fairly good job.

That's what I figured, thank you!

Sorry.....last thing. Any best bang for your buck speakers you could think of for the Denon?

You would have to list a budget for a pair of speakers and a sub-woofer to be able to give you help you decide.

Whatever you find on sale here is going to be about the best deal you can find for new speakers on sale.

This is about as cheap as you can go for decent speakers and sub-woofer

If your willing to build the speakers & sub-woofer from kits.

Check your local Craigslist for what is selling used.

I'd probably be looking to do $300 - $500 for the speakers

I fell heir to a Denon AVR-3000 that I now use for 2-channel sound. We bought it new ca. 1997 and used it primarily for 5.1. After all these years, the ProLogic circuit finally gave up the ghost. I snagged a pair of B&W DM560 speakers at Goodwill for $25. It sounds amazingly good in my library using the Bypass setting on the AVR. Added a Pioneer PL-518 turntable and am back in vinyl after more than 20 years away. Fortunately hung on to my LPs all these years (the whole time fending off the wife who wanted to get rid of them). Also sounds great with an iPod as the source.

and yes, I've been considering a pair of B&W's for this. Glad to hear you have had success!

Used Energy speakers like the RC10 or the older eXL (eXL-16 are superb for the money) series are great. I also like older Mirage with the gold dome tweeters like the M490.

Congrats on the receiver.  Yes it's old, and it wasn't even top of the line when it first came out.  But it was absolutely a quality piece of kit, and if I owned one (I had a related model, I think the 2801, back in 2002), I'd still use it to this day.  Other than lacking HDMI, I don't really see the need to upgrade, unless you wanted to spend like $1000+ for a real high end system.  I ran the related Denon speakers that were out in Japan at the time, so no real advice on that front.  But congrats on getting a good piece of kit for free!

Best,

-Jason
