I am looking into making my first major foray into speakers and am looking into the JBL LS305 (or something similar such as the Rokit5, etc). What would be the best way to control the volume on that? Would the Schiit SYS work for my needs?

What sources will you be using?
So whatever you would be plugging the JBL LSR305 into now.

Any preamp - what other features are in the same box will depend on what other gear you use. For example if you're using only digital sources with digital outputs but you also will drive headphones, then something like an AudioGD NFB-15 would be the best. If you're going to use an analogue source or analogue output from a digital source, then the Sys will work, especially if you have two sources.

It's best to combine pro or semi pro active monitors with an audio interface (a sort of pro audio DAC plus).

The two products have been designed and have evolved to work together seamlessly for over 20 years now.

Good starter models include the Focusrite Scarlet range, the Native Instruments Audio range and the less expensive models from MOTU. If you can afford it get something from RME, they have the best software and support.

You might also consider a proper monitor controller. This is a new model and inexpensive for what it does. Audient id14.

It's best not to mix your metaphors, so to speak. Either stick with hi-fi grade grade gear with passive speakers and an AVR/stereo amp or go pro audio with active/powered speakers and an audio interface.

The SYS would work, but you could also just go for the Emotiva Control Freak
