I'm thinking about building a nightstand system for listening in bed. Gear I'm considering at present are the Head Direct EF1 hybrid amp and the Yuin OK1 earbuds. I listen mostly to classic rock, progressive rock, electronic, and psytrance.

For a source, I have a 3G iPod. But I've never really liked it. I've tried it with the headphone output with the stock earbuds, Shure E3c's, and KSC-35's, and the sound has been fatiguing and harsh with an unpleasant bump in the upper midrange (IIRC).

For my new setup I would run Rockbox and play FLAC files via a line out cable to my headphone amp. What do people think of the SQ of the 3G iPod's line out?

Thanks!

It has been a number of years since I last heard a 3rd gen iPod but as I remember the line-out sq was perfectly acceptable when feeding an original Xin SuperMacro amp. This combo was my first serious portable rig.
