Home-Made IEMs

I'm still having no chance soldering these caps. I'm not quick to blame bad sellers or products, but none of these are working regardless of my soldering techniques. I've tried high heat, low heat, using high quality solder flux and wire, scratching the surface to expose the copper, nothing. Tested continuity before and after with new caps and old. Nothing.

Does anyone have any recommended caps from Ali? I live in Asia, so many western electronic stores are out of my reach.
I think the cap cannot be tested using continuity. You need to test capacitance. Best if not attached to any circuit.

Thank you for support and help with soldering crossover tips and all other stuff:)
ITs sonion 33 and knowle ed . Dipped in egger with some cool wood plates from aliexpres:) , cable as well from Ali…

Bad lighting there but you can see :)

I'll see if my cheapy multimeter can do that. Right now I just want to know power is going from one end to the other.

Thank you!

There's your issue, caps don't let DC current through. They have higher impedance at low frequencies which is why they act as a high pass. DC is basically 0Hz AC so the cap isolates. Btw, I'd recommend investing in a nice multimeter, it's good to have something where you feel like you can trust the measurements.

Maybe a good multimeter is in my books later on. This one is fine enough. Cheap chinese one that came with my soldering iron, but the best I've had. Just this issue is the problem I'm facing.

Edit: Scratch that. Found out the caps I have are waaaaay too high of value so they were pretty much killing stuff. Ordered specific values from a popular dealer.

Been off head-fi for a while, but the chinese DD manufacturer huayunxin released some 7mm tweeters for 10khz+ and some 12mm full range drivers. Going to see if i can make something interesting with them. Isolated, the FR seems pretty good so far, though the tweeter might need some tubing for resonance 14k+. Ill post the final schematics here if they turn out well. I haven't listened to them yet but this might be a pretty good way to get phenomenal treble extension on a budget.

They are terribly matched, really expensive at RMB50 per piece too. The KZ CRN used them (I think) and the drivers in the iem I got were matched terribly too.

I like DD driver, can you share the link or pm me the link. thks so much.

Huayunxin doesn't seem to have a shop on Taobao it seems... I've bought them factory direct via Alibaba.

I've got sample batch from them. Can't speak to how they are matched because I only tested 1 unit of each I got. They are definitely very expensive - like 5x-10x regular DD (at industrial scale). Maybe if you are building smth for yourself you could probably justify spending $10-13+shipping on a single DD. The electrostatic 7mm tweeter is interesting but nothing to write home about because the spl is relatively low so for multi BA setup you'd probably need at least 2pcs per side and that's just impossible to fit into an IEM. I think they have a store on Aliexpress.

I bought a sample batch of 20 or something, and they were pretty badly matched, might be just bad luck for me. The pair that came in the KZ CRN was actually off by 20db on one side lol. They also had super strong magnets in them - I don't think they can be used too close to the BA drivers.

Id suggest getting a dedicated capacitance meter if you don't already. You will find HUGE variations in readings from caps that are supposed to be the same value. Also, I find the annotations on the cap that denote values impossible to decipher and impossible to see on small caps! Then again, my eyes are old.....
