HiFiMan RE-600 Review

I purchased a used set of RE-600S on Head-Fi from @daveemac (thanks Dave) and received them yesterday. I spent about 6 hours with them last evening. I'll be putting them through its paces again today. But from last night's audition, I'm really digging them so far. I use the smallest black tips with the slot in the middle. They're inserted as deep as they can possibly go a la Etymotic-style, but they're looped behind my ear instead of straight down. I'm used to deep insertion due to using hearing protection devices in the past. But yeah, these are some seriously delicious IEM's. The mids are stunning. And the bass is certainly present and I'm not a basshead, but it's there when called upon, just the way I like it. They're keepers!

Here is a stock photo of the tips I'm using that came with the RE-600S.

No doubt interest in these has long since waned but I'll ask anyway.

I'm not really an IEM person but convinced myself to order a pair, then found this thread with the cable horror stories. Typical! So obviously I'm wary even before I've got them. Is there a v2 of the RE-600 (non-S) and any clear way to distinguish v1 from v2?
