So how exactly does the HM901 achieve line out? I saw some kind of Docking to 3.5mm connector being sold on Head Direct

I do NOT want to carry ANY kind of "docking" device with me to use the Line out, I can live with a docking Cable for line out use. That said how much improved is bettery life without the amp card and only using LO with the unit.

My hm801 is... kinda dead. It has no USB support and for $100 I get a warrenty and have my 801 replaced... BUT I'm worried  I'll wind up with a new HM801 that pops in between tracks... that is something my current unit has never done [it is apprently 2-3 years old]

So that said, how does the hm901  achieve line out, and what is the  most stable and neutral sounding firmware. I like my hm801. never had to change the firm ware on it, and OMG line out on board... but I'm terrified to get a unit that pops inbetween tracks... I had an old DAP that did that it drove me nuts

I did contact Hifiman about any kind of protection from "popping"

It is a cable that attaches to the same place as the charging connector and where everything else connects. Easy to use and not a dock but just a cable with a 3.5 mini out.

And YOU sir mad my Day!

I may honestly Sell my HM801 very soon to buy a 901

what is the price on a used HM901, I see that it sells for about $1000 on eBay. I may contact Hifiman and see if they would be willing to allow me to upgrade [with sufficent payment ofc]

The alternative, you may wish to check with Hifiman, is to trade in your 801 for the 802. The 901 and 802 can use all the accessories interchangeably. :)

Nah If O'm going to get rid of my HM801 it's going to be for a 901, I have no interest in a "side grade"

I emailed Hifiman Customer Service as well as made a post here. I really hope it's something that they can do, I can totally live with a Line out Cable, that's pretty simple to use imo and it can't be any more ackward than my HUGE 3.5mm interconnectors which I lug around lol

so let's hope they can help me out :3

@ Mshenay
Why would you use the HM-901 with an external amp on the go?

To me one of the highlights with HM-901 is that it's extremely good sounding with the internal amp(s).
I have the Balanced amp and it drives ANYTHING from a highly sensitive CIEM to HE-6 beautifully.

To be frank - even though I have both Burson Soloist and Leben CS300 for desktop use - I often just plug HE-6 directly into the DAP.
With my CIEMs it's practically always directly to the DAP.

While the raw SQ of the 801 is very good, it's not as usable as the 901 with CIEMs because of channel imbalance at lower levels. It also doesn't play 88.2kHz files. And then the 901 is more transparent. The 801 is warmer sounding and soundstage seems to be wider, but this - at least partly - is caused by the treble roll off in the 801.

As a whole (SQ and other aspects) the 901 is a clearly better DAP. After I got my 901, I hardly used the 801 even though I kept it for about half a year after I got the 901.

Well with all the amp boards you can get with the 901, once you have invested in it, you only have to buy whatever board you might want to try or use next or if you have a few, whatever suits your desire. There are some other new boards coming out from what understand and why not.

Agree. Especially since the minibox will drive hard to drive cans like the HD800, beyer T1 and AKG K702 with authority.

Me too! That is going to be a big transformation for my overall rigs' (speakers and headphones) layout.
