I slip mine into a small pillow case with a zipper when not in use.

Funny since I just bought one of these:
I had a look for grill material and I found: Modelling Wire Mesh - Aluminium

It is pretty easy to mod - you can cut these sheets with normal scissors.
They both sound really good.
I think I’ll keep the bigger mesh grills and spray paint them black.

Thank you all! A BIG wow on going grill-less! The staging for classical now is spectacular on the HE-5LE. Can't mod the 6 yet, on private loan-to-buy.
I had removed the felt inserts previously for better treble response but getting rid of the grill goes further into giving that "open" sound characteristic. Bass is still there in spades. (Yea, I do put covers on top of all my headphones.)
Thank you, again.

So naked is the new Black?! Amazing that a few strips of wire can hold up the program... on with the show.

More likely, it's the thin membrane attached to the grills.

Tried to go grill-less today (only this mod). Removed ring, grill and foam and listened. Didn't like the result at all. Sounded "body-less", "empty" and somewhat muted.
Re-fitting everything, restored back the somewhat-closed but reference signature I was enjoying so far.

Not sure why you feel like that, maybe sending more time with grill-less and playing with different track will give you more sense to grill-less.
Or maybe you need to do the fuzzer mod. I did the grill mod to open back the soundstage after doing the fuzzer mod. The fuzzer mod adds clarity and detail but reduces soundstage.

Thanks Jerg,
I am not sure where to get the felt from, what thickness and quality is preferred, is this is good enough ?
