I got them direct from AKG in the US.  If you're in the US, contact Frank Rodriguez.

frank.rodriguez@harman.com

or call him at 818-920-3279.  Great guy, very helpful.  I paid $14.74 per pad, $7 FedEx Ground.

If you're not in the US, you can get them from Moon Audio
http://www.moon-audio.com/akg-k701-k702-earpad.html
available in grey or black ($7.50 extra per pad!)  Not cheap.  Other options are

http://www.headphone.com/accessories/headphone-parts/akg-k702-cushion--one-side.php
lists as black, doesn't give the part number.

I thought I saw them at Full Compass, but don't now.  YMMV.

The AKG part number is 2458M12020

HTH.

Thanks a lot!

Thanks guys for the replies.

So now it comes down if buying a DAC is worth it. Thats what we are discussing in the Bifrost Uber thread and one of the guys has the same setup (CL Titanium HD).

I just need to find the right tubes to get the bass I desire.

No problem

If you get them, post some impressions.  What pads do you use on your HE-500s now?  Stock, jergpad mod, something else?

Mime went back in their case and are collecting dust right now...mostly because I like the other phones I have better...

I found out that with the right amp the hd650 just shines.. Ask fearless1 :D

Sigh, still cant decide between the HE-400 and the HE-500 cans... I wish I could audition them both without having to actually BUY them both and return one.

Look out for local head-fi meets maybe?

I guess it depends on your liking for bass. The HE-500 is a bit bass shy (has a flat bass response?), depending on which amp you use with it, but it has nice definition and extension. With a speaker amp it get some nicely added slam and impact which negates it somewhat.

Jerg! You never PMd me back! I sent you a message asking about your take on the two since you have both listed in your sig. And yea, I guess thats about the only other way. Ill just have to keep my eyes open.

I get too many PMs nowadays and unfortunately can't go through all of them. Tell me, 1) tight snappy bass, lean open sound signature, sparkly treble, or 2) grand bass, soothing slightly-wet sound signature, smoothed-over treble?

If 1), then HE400 (or HE4 if you have a powerful amp already), if 2) then HE500. If you are still unsure, try to attend a head-fi meet.

Yea I have read that around the net too. That is why I was thinking of the Emotiva Mini-X A-100 if I went with the HE-500's. Would that be a good amp for the HE-400 as well?

So what if I added to that equation that I was thinking of powering the HE-400/HE-500 cans with either a Bottlehead Crack w/ Speedball or an Emotiva Mini-X A-100?

Crack is not mean for planars, won't sound very good. Get the Mini-X A-100.

Am I the only one who really really didn't like the HD650?
biggrin.gif

I enjoy them balanced but still rarely use them. The HE 500 just do everything better, IMO. I use the cable from the HE-6.

What amps are preferred?
