But there is one person here who disagrees wih me on that....

As i said..try one..but i see NOT ONE SINGLE One of u has done that....except for fearless but he has put his mind on the pair lyr -he500.

I do not disagree with your opinion,  we all hear different. But as an owner of both amps, my ears, not my mind prefers the Lyr with some premium tubes over the 337 with premium tubes with the  HE500. Granted I have spent a ton of money finding the perfect tubes to my ears (it is an addiction no doubt)  to find what I have now, but I am actually down to three sets ATM for the Lyr after trying well over 150 sets.  The Lyr is not the best amp I have heard/own, but at its price point and some research on tubes it has very good synergy with the HE500.

My DAC upgrade was the biggest change in sound to my ears.

Which tubes are you using ? I'm still hesitating between the 339 & Lyr.. Currently I'm using the magni/modi

My favorites with the HE-500 are.

Laraidotechnique E188cc (French made, 1966) My favorites.

Telefunken E188cc (1965) Intimate and soul stirring.

Dario Miniwatt E188cc (Holland made)  Good with modern music.

At least you whittled them down to three excellent pairs

I have the 1966 RTC E188CCs, but from the Heerlen factory.  They are awesome with the HE-500s.  With the grill mod and Q701 pads, the soundstage opens up nicely.  I'm hoping the Telefunken E88CCs ('60s vintage) will provide a suitably different sound, assuming they're still available at a decent price once I can afford them.

I am too fickle to settle on one HP, I change them around often (amp, Headphone etc.) so mid-fi to lower summit-fi is my realm (I got a great deal on the HD800 so I could not pass it up). I go about a week and swap everything around.  And to be honest with you, I have never heard them as of yet.

So I really have no clue if I would like them enough to justify the expense.

Probably best to keep it that way

Being into vintage 'stats actually isn't that expensive.. I mean it can be, but for now I am satisfied with the 'not flagship' 'stats and amps (eg. not omega, 007 andn 009, BHSE, KGSS, you name it)

I hear the ATH-AD900 is excellent for classical and it's more budget friendly.  The HE-500 would fill in the remaining genres quite nicely though

Like I said, I find HE500s to do fine in the genre, with the whole list of modifications that improve its openness and soundstaging. Speaking of which another one of those is the earpad-angling mod I did a couple of weeks ago. I don't think I'll document it though because it's a bit too hard to do right for most people IMO.

^In short what did you do?

I'll keep saying it re: angled pads: the Q701 pads are easy to attached to the HE-500's mounting rings, and a pair is cheap, at least within the US direct from AKG.

Want to hear some nice electronic music that really makes the bass kick with these things?
