Just got an e-mail from Head Direct regarding their upcoming Black Friday sales. HE-400i is only $299 from 23rd to 30th November. No better time than this!

Holy smokes! That's awesome! I'll probably get a second one just in case.

Hi All,
I'm considering pulling the trigger on buying HE400i, however I have some last minute concerns.
I listen to a wide range of music, but I slightly lean towards electronic music, especially psybient, uplifting vocal trance etc. More melodic electronic stuff overall.
I'm concerned that HE400i would be not 'airy' enough for those genres and might be too dark?

Not at all, I listen to mostly electronica myself, but also a very wide variety of other music and the 400i is awesome for electronica. You don't get the crazy sound stage, but everything else is pretty damn impressive.

Just got the 400i and there's a very feint crackling/crinkling sound when I put them on. Not sure how to best describe the sound, but it sounds like what you hear inside your head when eating pop rocks candy, except quieter. It's there even after I've unplugged them from my computer. Any suggestions?

that's the bad side of sales..
now i almost regret buying them for full retail price :\

Schiit don't do sales just for that reason, and i like them for that.

I agree, have a price and stick to it. Let the resellers do what they do, but the manufacturer needs to be committed to their price structure. I would be pissed to have paid full retail a few months ago and now see this. Good to move units, but bad PR if you ask me.

They do sell MSRP for (a bit less than) $400 in China though, so... $300 new from head-direct makes sense. It's just that Hifiman used different MSRP between China and the rest of the world. I don't know why they do that.... I don't like their $100 or so MSRP differences either.

Is a good headphone the 400i to listen "hard" metal? death metal, metalcore...

I'll bet it would be quite good, but it really depends on your preference. The treble might still feel a little prominent if you have really young, sensitive ears. Certainly the 560 would be a tough headphone for these genres. I think the 400i is a pretty even headphone so it should go as well as most. I'm sure you know those musical genres are typically not very well recorded and extremely compressed so if you like it loud almost any headphone is going to have a tough time sounding good, or at least not their best. I love metal, but I typically have a tough time loving these recordings.

$299 is a hell of a deal.

I never had any intentions on getting the 400i, but I'm ready to give them my money. How are they compared to my current flagship openback, the AKG Q701? I know I'll miss soundstage, but anything else? It seems like the 400i would be an awesome upgrade.

Mostly listen to hard rock / classic rock, and Jazz.

Agree, the 400i is a fantastic price/performance headphone. I think it might be an even better value than the 560 which is a big deal. I'm quite happy with the 400i.

HE-400i is definitely a better deal than HE-560.

Agreed. I was very disappointed with the HE-560 for some reason. I thought it was a step down from the HE-500 as well as the HE-400i.
