I'm looking at a few pairs of headphones mostly the akg k701 or i can actually buy the ad700 and m50(180 for both) for a little less then the akg 701(200) I won't have an amp but might in the future so if anyone can help me out that would be great. I will be using the headphones for mostly movies/ first person shooter video games and usually rock music i like my instrument seperation .

Forget the K701 ~ they require a dedicated rig, if you have a very competent soundcard (XiFi Titanium, Auzentech
Bravura, ASUS Essence STX) then you'll get by, volume will be fine but they won't sound very refined from
the on board headphone amp on the card.
Otherwise, AD700, great gaming and starter open big can. No need for serious amping.
Even better?
Second hand AD900.

Grado are killer for rock. SR80i and upgrade to the bowl pads. And you should still have some cash left over.
I get these pretty cheap its roughly 80 for each headphone m50 and ad700 and i get the k701 for 200 is there anything else you would recommend for gaming in that price range ?

ad700 is very recommended for gaming and it has good separation. if you can buy ad900 do it, people say it's better than ad700 in every way and especially in the midrange which is important for guitars and vocals in rock music.

Why get both? I would go new/used AD900 or if you're set on two headphones, AD700 and SR80i.

ah ok. but i'm pretty sure ad900 is much better than sr80i in every way. even in rock. i think it's better to have 1 good headphone than 2 mediocre headphones.

Without an amp? AD900 - hands down.
With a good HP amp, the 701/702 - hands down.

I don't know if the mixamp could properly drive the 701s, about the cheapst amp recommended for them is the m-stage....
i've owned the dt880 and paired it with the compass I really coudn't tell a difference....except loudness but no actual improvements in any SQ. I used the headstage arrow with my dt880 and found more of an improvement in bass and also used it with my esw10's and the subbass was redic I've never heard bass so amazing... I found it kinda awkward to be honest I'm going to try out the k701's unamped then get the mixamp and check it out if not i'm just going to return the k701's and buy the ad900 or ad700.
