The stock K271 really ain't bad, but it has some issues IMO: Not quite enough bass and an awful comfort.

Regarding the sound, I had the luck to get dyed DT770 pads from headphile, these don't alter anything, but add a nice kick & rumble that every other pad just isn't able to provide. NoXter & me made quite some reverse engineering efforts, but the closest we ever got was approx. 85% of the headphile pad sound perfection.

Okay, that was the sound, now to the comfort. Actually, the Superlux HD660 gets sold quite cheap (35€), as you can see on the pic, it's basically a copy of the old Beyer DT770 with some cheap built-in systems.

What I did was slaughtering that Superlux thing and use all its headband components for my "31th of february" K271. That was quite a bit of work and hesitation, but I'm quite pleased with the results, now I've got a K271 with the well-known Beyer comfort.

Not that I want to show off, but I doubt that there's any other K271 existent on this planet that sounds that good. My advice to all K271 headfiers: Get those dyed headphile DT770 pads, it's more than worth the 50$ they ask.

I'm listening to Serge Gainsbourg on my 272's with the dyed pads from headphile. Welcome back bass! The low end is much more musical now, with more sustain and rumble. Also, a lot more comfortable since the extra 3mm of depth mean my ears don't touch the headphones anymore.

Sorry to say that I have left team AKG meanwhile, the DT880CB was a too strong contender. That very AKG was kept "in the family" though, it now belongs to a german forum moderator who dearly loves them.

wow, DT880 Closed Back? Am I reading that right? Very cool. I'll have to get into that thread...
I have to say, I love my AKG's. It's my first respectable piece of audio gear (along with my nuforce DAC > Shanling ph300). This forum is great!

I have to give this a try after I get bored of the stock version.

I think Larry from headphile has jumped onto that meanwhile and explicitly offers his dyed DT770 pads for the K271. The price is really steep, but it is more than worth it. Warm the pads up with a hairdryer before putting them on.

Nice hybrid! But I personaly find that AKG headband solution comfortable. I ordered K701 so I'm curious about those bumps. But there is always K601 headband mod... Haha.

Ah, you did it vice versa?

Yes, since I own both headphones. :D I think I kind of like the DT770/250 consumer with the AKG pads. Not as comfortable, but the highs seemed to be less, and the mids more forward, and the bass is still there. Soundstage seems to be good still, I don't notice any difference, but my ears are not the best. My DT770s are very bright, for some reason, much more so than my DT990s.

The K271 with the stock DT770 pads, I'm still somewhat undecided. There's more bass, but it seems less integrated. It definitely adds a U shape to the sound, but I liked the K271 highs.

Wow, that's pretty cool. Can you order velour/leather pads from Beyer direct? I was looking through their "accessories" page and thought I saw that they offered pads for $30 a set, which included "black velour" pads.

Second question, can the K240 variants (M and sextetts, specifically) use the same pads as the K271? In other words, can I place Beyer pads onto K240s? I hate the stock vinyl/crappy pleather pads on my K240s and was wondering what they would sound like with some leather pads attached, but I didn't know what would fit and what would work out.

They do.  So any earpads that fit the K271's will fit the K240's and a list of other AKG headphones that share a similar design.
