I have the THX 789 headphone amplifier, but also want to use JBL 305P powered speakers with my setup. As I understand, the THX does not have pre-outs to allow me to control the speaker volume.

Do I use something like the JDS Labs OL Switcher to allow me to control the volume of the speakers when not using headphones? If so, how do I set this up?

Source->DAC->Switcher->THX & JBL ?

If that's the case, how do I connect the switcher to the outputs?

DAC->switcher input via RCA

switcher->3.5mm output to RCA input on THX

switcher->RCA output to 1/4 SE input on JBL? (does the L RCA go to only the left speaker and R RCA to right? or how do I connect this?)

I'm confused about how to set this up in general and appreciate any advice.

Hey,
Welcome to head-fi!
It would be easier to put the Switcher between the THX amp (using the SE Pass rca plugs) and your JBL speakers.
So you'd have DAC -> THX amp -> Switcher -> JBL's
