Is it necessary to "activate" the optical out.... and if optical is engaged will headphone out jack work (because a) not getting anything from my optical out... and b) headphone jack is engaged).

Yes, it needs to be turned on in the Menu...
Go to "Settings"/General Settings/Playback Settings, and scroll down until you see "Optical output"
Press enter, then highlight "Yes", press enter, and back out of all the menus.

You will then see the red light in the Line Out jack. It will still play analog line out and headphone out as well as optical.

Keeping the optical output enabled will, however, reduce battery playtime, as it takes power to run the circuit.

That's because it's not under general settings - it's in the top-level settings menu.

Yes you need to enable optical out, and headphone output (and when using remote control) also works when using optical.
