If one thinks of PS500e as a bass monster, what would Beyer DT-1770 Pro be …? 😳

Do F-pads on the PS500e really work for you? The Fs boom up the bass quite a bit for me and the PS500e are already bassy as they are.
I understand what you mean, I dont mean to ridicule. I thought SR225 a bit boomy, a bit unbalanced, and did not like, compared to SR80.
ime, and we dont experience the same, and some dont experience at all but opine like they have.

I didn't say bass monster per se but for a Grado it is. And with F-pads the bass got uncomfortably prominent and boomy with the PS500e.

I will try that combination again, it's a while ago that i tried it.

You're describing the 225, but I vastly preferred the sound and musicality of the SR225e to the SR80e, huge improvement and for me well worth the price difference.

The 225 shouldn't really be compared directly to the 225e. Different driver and cup. The 225e is much more widely available, too, as any 225 is at least 17 years old by this point.

After my pad rolling experiments.I came to the conclusion only use grado pads as the aftermarket ones I have used where a let down but fun.
In the end I nearly always end up with the original pads except my RSX 1 which I love with genuine g pads.

Tried the G pads with my RS1X now and they do sound good indeed.

I read a lot of replies on this thread about pad rolling and decided to pick up a pair of G pads and try them in my RS-2Xs. I figured there was a good chance they wouldnt work out and I'd sell them for a little less than new in a few days.

Well, they actually work really well in my case, and I attribute this to 3 factors:

1. Somewhat dark/bassy source stylus
2. Clear and powerful amplification
3. I have a shelf EQ on my mixer which I set to -1db on highs and +1/+2 on lows

If I just try them on a $30 dongle to my phone with no EQ, they sound pretty bad. Of course you can tell the cups are not heavy enough and/or don't put enough clamping pressure on the pads, but they are a nice change of pace for better long term comfort and instrument separation. I call them the RS-2000x with the G pads on. :gs1000smile:

The L-pad presentation is nice, but only L-ASHATA pads seemed to hit the right balance of tone with RS2x (leans very slightly bright but it is a cohesive / linear transition so doesnt sound disjointed / annoying). For RS2x, I do recall liking L-ASHATA most but the discomfort was problematic (however still more comfy than L-genuine). The slight trebliness of L-ASHATA + RS2x does eventually catch up with me over extended listening. Its not grating - sounds really smooth, just prefer more bass. I imagine RS2x and PS500e are very close sounding aside from PS500e having slightly more bass that helps it mesh with F-pads for me. RS2x with F-pads comes off as very slightly mid-centric relative to PS500e.

Geekria donuts I did not try again (yet), I recall not liking as much as L-pads (with RS2x). Maybe slightly better with PS500e, we'll see.

Between PS500e and RS2x, PS500e is the bassier headphone and I imagine could be perceived as a bit too much (boomy @paraphernalia ) if youre coming from RS2x. fyi, I've only tried PS500e with F-pads.

edit: about graphs
Measured the RS2x, PS500e, and SR80 with L-genuine, L-ASHATA, and Geekria donuts. Will upload graphs for your amusement and in no way am claiming accuracy, just for relative comparisons. Im afraid the graphs arent going to do well without some subjective summaries, but I am really not interested in trying them all - only interested in a few. The graphs will not be pretty (relative to appearance of F-pad measurements) and will need some explanation about my supraaural measurements and how ear-gain needs to considered. Ill search for an article to quote, but the gist is that circumaural and supraaural need different compensation curves because supraural pads bypass some ear-gain that cirucumaural pads do not... My measurements are using a compensation curve designed for circumaural pads, which means approximately 2-5khz might be over represented in my measurements.

Forgot how much I loved my GH2's! The cable has always driven me nuts but about a month ago I laid them on a tall box in the spare bedroom and let them hang to the floor. Usually I curl up the cable and put them in a cabinet. I am not fighting the cable at all now. It just lays calmly on my chest, NOT rubbing against my neck. A lesson learned!

Today I have plugged them into the Violectric V220, out of a BF2 playing my best of the 80's playlist. They sound just perfect. Great mids, Very adequate bass and enough treble. This amp is so warm and full sounding.

As my headphone collection gets bigger, each headphone gets less head time and that is really unfair to these guys. :L3000:

Another Grado SR60 arrived. Seems to again confirm SR60 and SR80 are same.
mehsures:
SR80 F-pads vs SR60 F-pads.jpg

Differences in measures could be pad related (I now have 3 x F-pads), poor methods, or driver variance. SR60 measures were done without average positioning method unlike SR80.
Im still of the mind that SR60/80 is preferable tonally over other Grado* for use with F-pads. Not done ascertaining if that's still true over PS500e as well. PS500e I suspect is not preferable tonally (reminder: small differences), but preferable as a total package when considering technical abilities.

*Must say my experience is very limited. Ive only tried Grado F-pads with RS2x, PS500e, SR225, and SR60/80. Long ago I had Hemp (F-pads) and RS2e (TTVJ deluxe). Im still very interested in trying vintage RS1/2 and perhaps GH4.
