any recommendations for heaphones a level or two above the koss porta pros? maybe with a bit more sound isolation but must be able to play very well umamped from a ipod, also, portability is a factor, price? under $200

Are you interested in IEMs or another supraural pair like the porta pros.  IEMs will give a lot better isolation.

well, I prefer supraural headphones for comfort reasons, I guess I'm looking for even better sound quality, any recommendations?

I personally don't like supraural 'phones too much, so I've never done much research into that type. 
 
What kind of music do you listen to?  I know Grados are almost universally praised for rock, and run well unamped.  You could look around here to get some other ideas as well.
