Electrets, which the K340 use, are true electrostatics as well. They just do not require an external bias supply.
Since these are 20-30 years old I guess it is no surprise that they vary so much between units, as the charge will degrade over time and the drivers loose spl.

I have a K-340 modded by Headphile with the blackcopper cable. Quite power hungry.
I don't think I would be totally satified if they were my only cans. Love them for jazz, and music with many instruments where soundstage is desirable. For hard rock, metal, heavy guitar oriented music, I much prefer my grados.

Sure, they are truly love of labor-- takes much modding and amp matching to perfection; not to mention the luck of getting the right pair. But once you are there, you don't want to move on...
