And why should 'butterfly' be so much better?
A fly made of, or covered in, butter? That's not a very nice thing to call your darling.

"Schmetterling" can probably be explained this way:
 
Schmetter[n] | -ling
 
"schmetter" can be associated with
schmettern (here: to smash/to hit/to dash and means the way of the movement of the wings) and
"-ling" at the end of the word can be a hint that it is a being/lifeform.
 
But we also have nice sounding words like Liebe (love).
"Liebe" sounds much more adequate to its meaning, than the English "love", I think.
 
Well... and a "butthead" is an "Arschgesicht" in German.

 
I speak Low-German as I am from north-western Germany
(well, not here in southern Germany, where I live at the moment, cause people here would hardly understand me otherwise).

In norwegian it's 'sommerfugl' (sommervögel, a good example of how related german and the nordic languages are), literally meaning summer-bird. I think that's pretty nice.
