I was enjoying my HD600s very much... that is until I wanted to tweak them
First, off comes the foam-ish layer that rests between your ear and the driver. "It'll muffel the sound" I thought. There was VERY little, if any, difference. Maybe a tad 'faster'.
I soon discovered that there is another layer of material inbetween the driver and the foam. This time it was a very dense screen-type cloth. It sounded like a nylon twill when you scratch your finger nail on it. One more layer to kill sound! This time, I was wrong
It appears that it acts as a diaphragm. Without, the HD600 drivers are just shrill; no bass or midrange. It is a must for these headphones to have this layer in order to give it their trademark warm sound.
Here's an image of the HD600 drivers in their natural habitat:

I will contact Sennheiser USA to see if it's possible to get new nylon(?) 'diaphragms'. I'm sure hope I can
I just wanted to warn the tweakers out there.
