I think you could be right. The tighter bass probably doesn't overpower the mids and highs like the d1000 do. To respond to your earlier post about comparing mids and highs; I don't have actual graphs to represent what i'm hearing, but the only reference i have to compare headphones are other headphones that i've heard before. Since you probably havent heard the d880 or ms2, we can probably compare the d2000 to sr80, ad700, and d1000.
If you are comparing the d2000 to the d1000, and there was absolutely no bass. Would the mids and highs of the d2000 be significantly/noticeably better than the d1000? I'm hoping that the d2000 is actually better in that area, rather than just having tighter bass.
if you go to song #8

White Sandy beach of Hawaii
listened to this back and forth a ton no amp straight out of the Mac Pro ?
while the sound is very very close the D2000 have a much more open feel like the instruments have more breathing room if you will ? its not right between the ears sound of the 1001
of course some of this is the headphones size and earpads etc.. but that is part of the sound
so what I hear is a bit more wood sound and while very close its a more pleasent sound and a bit less speakery sounding ?
so significant ? not sure yes and no ? I think yes my wife would say no ? I say that open feel is the improvement and makes it not as in my head as around me I can really forget I am wearing headphones on some things its so much more open feeling to me ?
the pickup off the strings has a bit more feel to it rather than a sound ? again small difference but its noticeable to me and if I was blind folded and the same ear pads somehow could be on I could pick out the D2000 and I would like that bit more open sound
track #12 in that album this is where I can really hear the difference the 1001 are still good but its so much more open with the D2000
and the dynamic range if you will of the drums allows then to sound much more like each type of drum ?
not as compressed and small again ? but along with that much tighter and not nearly as sloppy ?
when I was looking asking in another thread about what to get ? part of my thing is I loved the Denon but wanted a bit less bass ? now that I have them I have had the D2000 about 2 weeks and about 4 - 8 hours or more each day on them but maybe what I wanted was more controlled bass !
the AD700 as you know has less bass ! and I found that I did not like that along with the highs being a bit bright at times almost harsh when trying to hear it loud
so was not as comfortable to listen to extended times without being tired
I can have the D2000 on for hours straight no problem the 1001 I noticed I have to have a bit lower volume level or the boomy gets a bit tiring

song #5
to me sounds tons better on the D2000 but here is a case where you hear more bass but its so much controlled its not like the 1001 where its trying to get the lower sound and just cant and it cant be again as dynamic with other instruments so again sounds much smaller which to me totally changes the sound
the more I did some back and forth with a few songs trying to think of how to describe it to you the more I think the mids and highs sound about the same but they are better placed with larger stage if you will ? not sure the cool headphone term for that
while the bass being so much better to me can really change the feel of a song ! such as the last example ?
now again I am looking for it and trying to hear it so again its not like on a scale of 1-10 its not a 5 to 10 its more a 8-9 in difference if that makes sense
but after having them I would not want to go back and wont ever listen to the grado again ?
I can say since I am more into home theater and speakers my NAD and PSB stuff is good enough stuff
the sound out of my setup is kinda the same before playing with placeement of the speakers and sub but once dialed in the bass really became controlled and the rest really opened up echo bounces and such were controlled and so while the sound might be about the same its a totally better sound if that makes sense ?
to me this is the best way to describe my 1000 compared to the D2000
its like the 1001 the speakers were set in the room and the sub but never dialed it in and placed the speakers and worked on the correct crossover point for the sub and sub placement and speaker placement but once I did that
the sound was like WOW OK this is more what I was hoping for ?
again hope this helps
