I have been trying to obtain some of these buffers to enable me to build a couple of low power consumption portable amps.

I am also curious about the sound of the buffer, my usual choice is the HA 5002.

I have located a couple of Uk sources one can offer a min of 50 pieces at
£4.95 + tax and shipping.
The other 12 pieces at £6.40 + tax and shipping.

Whilst I am curious about these chips, I am not too keen on spending a lot
trying them out unless they are going to sound good.
I realize they were well regarded in their time and the low quiescent current
does hold great appeal.

Do they compare well with the 5002 [partnered with AD8610 Opamps]

Are they worth the asking price? [for the 12 pieces as spending £300 for the 50 is out of the question]

I am just fishing around at the moment so any views would be appreciated.

I like 'em.

I like them better than BUF634's and HA5002's.

£6.40 - is that about $6? I say get them.

When you use them on a non-portable app and stack them 4 high, I think there is nothing that sounds better.

Except maybe EL2008's.

ok,

Hi erix
Thanks for the reply.
Interesting that you think they sound nicer than the 5002...Hmm

But the price all up [ with tax and shipping] is more like $15 a piece, so you will understand $180 [min order 12 pieces at this price] is quite a bit to spend on some buffers to experiment with.

Do you remember the it original price when they were still a current product?

Cheers

$3...Alas indeed

50 of those would now cost me more than $500

Seems like all my diy audio projects need some sort of obsolete component,
or it becomes unavailable just at the time I need it

EL2001 were the META42 buffers. From Tangent's site:

Quote:

"The META42 is a dead end design. The Elantec EL200x buffers the boards depended on were discontinued. I did make a new version of the META42 with the Burr-Brown BUF634 buffer; that version does work well, and you can download the design files from this site. I abandoned that line of development because I found that changing the topology to be more like that of the PPA gave even better results. The result is the PIMETA."

IIRC, Tangent actually preferred the EL2001's to the BUF634's, but was forced to redirect due to thier being discontinued... Still, $15 is way steep.

Peace,
Sanaka

Hi Setmenu,
I just checked with Norm and he still has the three EL2001CN's. Since Nisbeth found them for you first, I'll give you first call on them. Please let me know soon, I don't want to buy them out from under you if you need them.
