Lawton Audio makes all kind of cups for Fostex/Denons. Pricey, but supposedly even better than stock since they're somewhat bigger and can be tuned to your liking:

Pricey is an understatement. Cups cost more than these headphones. Probably reasonable for the higher priced TH900 or D7000, though.

those cups cost more than the headphone itself. and i thought cables were ridiculous.

Rich mans sport.

That's why they say welcome to headfi - allow me to check your wallet but never give it back. Just need to be strong here and resist temptation.

I was weak when I first joined about 3 years ago. Took me a while to realize I don't have dog or bat senses, let alone the budget, to justify all the diminishing returns.

Good part is if you go all the way, you might figure that it's not such a big deal and amend your ways. Fun initially, then meh.

Yeah, sounds good, but at a certain point, it's like so what? Yay, Ive got good sound, now what happens? Maybe I'm not the biggest fidelity guy, but it's like everything else in life.

Chase it thinking it gonna be so great and then get there, and meh. Once you get "there" you might finally see it's not that big a deal as you thought.

Maybe I'm just a miserable guy, I don't know.

This has to be the sexiest headphone ever made. And the superior wood quality makes this an easy extra 50$ spend. Trading in my mahogany indeed. That extra bass could bring it to TH-900 levels?

Not very likely. The core to TH900's power is its 1.5 Tesla magnetic circuit, where TH-X00 is >1.0 Tesla.
Bass isn't all about quantity (volume) in dB, but more importantly quality, impact, speed, decay, etc. Tuning can alter some of these quality quite a bit but I think the more powerful magnet will ultimately make the difference. It might be perceived similar enough in the end result depending on equipment and personal sensation, or sometime it is enough for that "one last bit" lacking to be huge unsatisfaction for a demanding man.

So that should make it a more refined/articulated can am I right?

i dont know much about tonewood but different wood does have different sound property. From what i know according to Will and google search. Mahogany tends to be bloomy and resonant. Purpleheart is less resonant due to it being harder and according to a guitar website purpleheart along with some exotic woods are tighter sounding. There was someone here on headfi who modded his grados headphones by experimenting with different wood types and found some wood to sound better than others. So purpleheart should be technically better. I may be wrong since no one has heart the new version yet. Some may like the bloom so they might prefer the mahogany version. But there might be changes in the driver as well. They did change the resonant material so they might have to adjust.

For the record, check these comments from one who has done measurements on both mahogany and purpleheart version of TH-X00 for a more insightful suggestion.

so not much difference in sound, its more of preference of aesthetics. yap, no need to spend more to get the same sound and build beside the cups. But if I had the money, sshhhhiiiiittttt

no, you can improve the sound, it gets better. But the question is do you care so much about that in the first place.
