Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements

a little more about modifications.
i decided to change pads. ordered from aliexpress angular HM5. but they are slightly smaller and the hole is much narrower.
now a lifehack, how not to tear them, when putting them on and not get confused.
you need a hair dryer and a spatula to remove the bike tire.
heat the back of the ear pads with a hair dryer and use a spatula to put on the ear pads. without a spatula, there is little chance to put it on and not tear it. with a spatula, I spent less than 5 minutes to replace both ear pads.

Update: I returned the original pads. I did not like sound with thick XM5 pads

T-X0 MK2 (stock tuning - T-X0 driver mesh)

*Talos v2 pads
*MK3 baffles
*Custom wide Argon strap
*Mayflower bass inserts

I was going to Argon another, but might get my own measurement kit, it sounds decent as is.

I have a 2.5mm TRRS connector that fits direct (no cup mods needed), will make my own cables to 4.4, XLR etc

I was never a fan of the overlapping pads on MK2, if you want to convert your MK2 to MK3 look, Full compass should be able to get the baffles. It also changes sound.

I've read through all the mods on the first page and decided to give it a go.

I started by adding lead strips to the driver surround for mass damping.

I took off the internal felt covering the bass ports and placed that one the back of the driver.

I put masking tape over the ports on the outside to fine tune the bass. The cups are sealed with masking tape instead of the screws during the incremental modding process.

I took out the 3.5mm unbalanced socket carefully with some pliers, preserving the upright and semicircular stanchions holding the socket in place. I filed the semicircular portions down a bit to fit a 4 pole 3.5mm socket.

I hot glued the socket in place.

I added bitumen paper to the wells either side then covered with loose cotton wool roll.

The socket from the outside:

3.5mm-4.4mm balanced cable:

I'll put the pads back in the groove and fine tune the bass ports after that, putting electrical tape on the inside once I decide how much bass I want.

Balancing definitely improves the separation and adds a little sweetness, joining up the registers more coherently.

I've got some more angled pads coming to complete this mod. I also added a Sennheiser HD600 4-blob headband under the Fostex one for more comfort.

Once I get the tuning right I'll probably sell this on and the DT770 I've modded.

The yellow discoloration on the white paper behind the driver is from glue. Glue is apparently used for adhering the magnets but somehow excess reaches the paper filter and is absorbed. The porous paper soaked in glue is no longer porous which has major effects on the intended design. See here for more info about the glue quality control issue.

=========

I think $220 refurbished T60RP makes a great starting point for mods since it includes stock: upgraded pads, headband comfort strap, and pre-wired for balanced connection.

Ive beeing using T60RP pads for my T20RP but works best for you depends on your other mods and your preferred compromises.

Thank you @Philimon for the information. I think I'll try some micropore tape over the gluey paper and put the felt back over the bass ports with a small window in the lower part as per the mod instructions.

I have a second pair so will see if they have the same problem. I could possibly sell them both and a dt770 for the t60...

Hi,

I'm a T50RP MK2 user, and I have a question for all the modders out there. Is the peak at 1.1 kHz normal?
I've tried several modifications, but no matter what I do, the peak still occurs. Maybe it's a problem with my DIY measurement station, but I'm not sure."
Maybe someone can help me?

Check out the Open Alpha thread I linked to in post #2812.
Thank you very much for trying to help. The link you posted has been helpful to me.
I had already replaced the original material with breathable tape.

The graph from user Biodegraded (SBAF) remains the same.

edit: I think I was able to find the error. The three vents at the cup were all open, and after closing them, the midtone seamlessly transitioned into the lower mids.

guys, I disassembled the driver and the magnet fell out of place due to poor glue. how to I install them back in the right order?
