Looks like PCM27xx based dac and that pitiful headamp section, you get what you pay for I guess.

I understand " you get what you paid for" . It was $129.00 MSRP but I guess they discontinued and throw it away for under $50.00.
 
I am mostly interested in the DAC portion and the analog volume control.
 
I currently use 2 set of Audio Engine D1 on my IMac and my PC and they come with a nice analog volume control so I can drive my Adam Audio power monitors.
 
The bitrate is a kind of low, isn't it? Don't see any review anywhere.

Pretty sure your D1 has much better dac and amp section than this fostex branded PCM27xx throwaway dac. Judging from the spec alone this is the same with those cheap pcm27xx dac you can get for even cheaper on ebay.
