Is it necessary for the female connector to protrude from the faceplate or is this just an alternate design choice + what is the difference between the current connector and the incoming version. Is it often fitear (IEM companies in general) revise the connectors?

Well the sockets are too big to be placed anywhere else except for on top of the faceplates.... I won't call it necessary but there's no other way I can think of.
 
Since there's no official announcement yet, there're only words from those who have talked to him and according to them the new connector will have better molding and a more user friendly shape. 
 
For other big players in the field (UE, JH, UM), probably once in a few years, but they still keep their old version as an alternative for customers to choose. In FitEar case this's gonna be the 2nd time I heard of so not sure what they're gonna do.

Yeah, unfortunately you're looking at a cable that very definitely occupies a niche market, thus you have to rely on boutique companies to make the appropriate cable.  Alas, they're not exactly highly efficient operations, and you may be looking at getting a beautiful cable, but with an exceptionally long waiting period.  That is my experience.

Why is it that Fitear use proprietary connectors? What are there advantages/disadvantages in comparison to the conventional two pin connector. Furthermore, is it possible to get aftermarket cables?

The connection is not proprietary it is used by various companies including Sennheiser, who was one of the first. Here are a couple of examples of aftermarket cables with the Fitear Connection:

There is no standard. There is the connection used by Fitear. There is the 2 prong used by JH Audio/Ultimate Ears/Westone etc etc. There is the MMCX which Shure and Fostex use as well as no Westone has switched to. There are a bunch of Senn connectors like the IE80. The list is almost endless for different connectors. So never assume one works with another. Always do some research. The connection on all Fitear's are the same as far as I know. We have been providing this cable for some time with no issue.

Oh boy... and I'll be traveling to HK to purchase a custom this summer....should I? Should I not?... Can't wait to see the products released (although they probably won't come out that soon).

PI an acronym for Parallel Import, which basically means they are not an authorised dealer for the product. From what I understand, Jaben is the only authorised dealer for FitEar in Singapore, while AV One and E1 Personal Audio offer PI-sets.
 
The main difference is the RMA/warranty of the products, if you have purchased a PI-set of TG! 334, you would need to pay for shipping for such services, while Jaben would handle the shipping. As for whether the shipping for PI-sets is to the retailer or directly to FitEar, you may wish to drop them and inquiry.

Thanks for the clarification. Shipping costs shouldn't be disregarded. According to Mingo, shipping from HK to Shanghai is $150 which seems quite steep to me.

334, you met your match, and it's the HE-6.

 Addictive vocals also.  Rediculously hard to drive headphones though.  Not as bassy as the 334, but you never know with a monster amp it may turn bassy.

Hey SilverEars! I have a HE-6 too and I agree that it is a wonderful can, and not easy to drive. Well, it is not bassy as such, when driven properly, but warmer than say the HD 800 or T1. And yes, it is very good for vocals.
