Gotta have that sweet sweet album art for your DSD my friend!
Sadly the only DSD128 I have is a digitization of a vinyl *shrug*

FiiO Music is not usable in this version. But the firmware is OK, the sound is unchanged.

the latest beta firmware is uploaded to http://www.mediafire.com/file/f1916dx4xd3xj9z/X5iii-ota-20190116.zip/file
;
But I just cannot it via the "firmware update" option in the "Technical Support" app on my X5 iii.
Is this expected after installing the Fidelizer Purist ROM and the kernel from jkbuha?
when I do the "firmware update", TWRP start up after X5 iii reboot.

It's unlikely that fidelizer has anything to do with this, but they both write to the system partition (unlike my kernel, which writes to boot) so you might want to exclude it first by flashing the last original FiiO firmware. You can keep my kernel or not, it's not going to interfere.
In general, when installing *any* FiiO OTA, unless instructed otherwise, always start off with a vanilla base. Sounds like something from bake-off, but it works...

Thank you for the advice.
After flahsing the vanilla 1.2.1 with the official firmware upgrade tool, I can upgrade the beta firmware with the technical support app.

I am on the current version of 1.2.1 and do not see it available as an upgrade.

You do not see it as an upgrade simply because it is still in beta, you have to ask FiiO staff explicitly (by writing to them in the FiiO support forum). Or idownload it from the link that I shared above and install it.I am on the current version of 1.2.1 and do not see it available as an upgrade.
Six weeks ago I picked up a Pioneer XDP-300R. Now that I have spent some time with it I can compare it to the X5iii.
First thing, the Pioneer has idiosyncrasies as well. It usually is not in the mood to display album art. Sometimes it does, most times it doesn't. It sounds fine, I would call it detailed and DRY. It does not match up well with my Shure SE846 IEMs. It's useless with the 846 with a balanced cable, zero bass. The X5iii is wonderful with the 846/balanced cable.
It does start up really quick, and it's pretty as hell.
I keep them side by side and I don't have a strong preference. The X5iii has been behaving which is nice.
No hate here.

I did the followings:
- connect X5 iii to PC
- copy the zip file to the sd card in X5 iii
- disconnect X5 from PC
- run "technical support" app on X5 and use it to do the upgrade

so far, my comments on the beta firmware:
@jkbuha The kernel version is upgraded in firmware update. What do you think about that? Do you need to apply your code change and re-compile a new version kernel (I know you are working on a new version of the kernel already)? Do you want me to test flashing your kernel on this beta firmware?
- the music app is upgraded with a new UI
However, the mysuc app just crashes in X5's Music Mode (though working fine in Andriod Mode)
- the sound seems to be changed a little bit and I love it
I am not sure whether this is due to the new music app or is related to the firmware upgrade

Installed this fiio beta firmware on top of stock 1.2.1 rom, via the technical support app.
aaaand, the back button, home button, and app switcher button are totally gone LOL.
Just... why?
