I'm just curious: are most of y'all using the R7 as a desktop AIO type of unit? I've spent the summer trying to figure out a way to remove my Macbook Pro from the audio chain.

-----

I do *not* use music streaming services; all my music is 16- and 24-bit ALAC (because I've been in Mac world pretty much my whole life). My music is stored on an external SSD (yes, I have multiple backups). Currently, I connect my SSD directly to a USB-C port on my Macbook Pro and connect my Bifrost 2/64 DAC directly to another USB-C port on my Macbook Pro when I am at my desk.

I currently have no speaker rig; I only occasionally listen to headphones/IEMs at my home office desk. I keep the R7 in mind potentially as a way to use it as device to which I could connect my music SSD and my DAC. I'm just not sure yet how I want to do this. I considered getting a Mac Mini (to use headless, controlled from my Macbook pro using screen sharing), but macOS updates sure seem to be a game of roulette lately, with functionality being messed with (e.g. remote file sharing earlier this year for like 6 months was a mess).

You can get the compatible remote from FiiO, the RM3, to control the unit. Plug in the SSD with your mushc into the USB port at the back of the R7.
You can rotate the unit to the side and set the screen as landscape if you are more comfortable with a screen like that since a lot of desktop streamers has a landscape screen format.
It would work well based on your needs IMHO.

Dear @FiiO

I use the R7 over Wifi in my local network and control it in roon ready mode from my windows noteboot. Network/ Wifi and stream are all running stable but sometimes I have a problem when I skip in the current playing song or when start a next song:

It then stops playing and roon shows “nothing to play”. In the roon logs I see then these messages:

Any idea how I get rid of this?

Thanks and best wishes.

Hi, can this streamer connect to a NAS or Network HDD? So I can play my local library? Or only streaming?
Dear friend,
Yes, you could try the media server function in the FiiO Music app for help.
Best regards

Hi @FiiO

This happens:
  • Sometimes when I jump in the current playing song to a different position in the same song
  • When I play an Album/ LP (don’t use Playlist): e.g. song 1 is playing > I click on song 2 to play > When the error occur then song 2 is not played and it jumps to later song in the album-list. But when I click 2-3 times the “play” button of the previous skipped "error" songs, it often starts playing (this appear independent of songs and time) So it's not a general problem that a playlist would be empty. (when ther is no other song in the list roon can jump to, it the stops full and show "nothing to play")

Dear friend,

Would you mind taking a detailed video and sending it to support@fiio.com. We will forward to the engineer for checking about that.

Best regards

Hopefully one day some company will finally release something like this but stripped down having only digital part with HDMI so it could be used as a unified digital DDC/source to stream, say, Apple Music Lossless etc. into my traditional HiFi with a decent standalone DAC - have to use my DX300 SPDIF for it now but it's very inconvenient :frowning2:

The R7’s ‘ace up its sleeve’ is Roon.

Being fully ‘Roon-ready’, it’s transformed my listening experience. My R7 with the HiFiMAN HE6se V2’s via 4-pin XLR is complete Nirvana! :gs1000smile:
