EU volume cap on Sony DAPs.

I know it has Android, but I am not sure if Android volume is capped by Sony's hardware or firmware. Only 50mW output in 3.5 mm jack... my FiiO x3 has 150mW

Hi, I am interested in buying a new Sony Walkman NW ZX500 (it will be available in November in Europe) for MQA support and TIDAL. However, I fear that European volume limitation (cap) will be included and no software fix is still available. I will use IEMs, but also full sized cans with standard 3.5mm jack. How was your experience with the NW ZX300? Can the volume cap be avoided using the 4.4 mm balanced audio output? Thanks

What happens is about once a month you hear four beeps and music pauses. It's a reminder volume warning from the DAP. You have to hit OK and the music continues playing.

Thanks. So, is there no volume limit? How about the balanced 4.4mm output? Does it have enough power to move full-sized headphones using the 3.5 mm output? I have an AudioTechnica MSR7...

OK, I have read the ZX300 manual. After 20 h playback period, it beeps and stops if volume is above EU limits. So it is usable, I read that volume of EU walkmans was too low even for IEMs, and hacks to avoid this limit. Has it enough power to drive IEMs in 3.5mm audio output?

My answer would be yes. I have AKG N40 and N5005. Use the search function on the ZX300 thread.

ZX300 would be useless and no-one would buy it, if it could not drive IEMs.

Thanks! I checked a web page showing hacks to remove volume limits of ZX300. It is called sonynwdesttool at rockbox.org This is why I had concerns about volume limitation in ZX300/ ZX500.

As said before, it only works on the zx300. if you are concern about the caps on the zx500, don't get the EU version.

Yeah, I tried this in the first place. Unfortunately, too expensive due to import taxes (at least 180 euros more by Amazon) and problems to return it in case of failure....will check another option (Fiio, A&K, iBasso...)

Hi.

Is the amp on this Sony Dap that weak?
Makes me wonder bout your concern.

The Msr7 isn't a heavy load. Should be load enough on average amps, even on 3.5 jack i think.

Run it on my V30 EU-Version and it's ear blowing. ^^
Is the V30 more powerful than such a dap?
I'm curios bout.

Fiio X3 II player has 225 mW output power and Fiio portable 60$ mini-amp E11k (Kilimanjaro) has 270-450 mW at 32-16 Ohm. They drive well my Audio Technica MSR7. The Sony NW ZX500 has 50mW in the 3.5mm standard output (200 mW in the 4.4 mm balanced output).

I wonder if the UK will be subject to the EU volume cap if they ever leave the EU. The UK might become a source for non-EU volume capped devices.
Hopefully.
But isn't it became a national guideline in Uk?
