I think I prefer the dx90 tuning over dx100 as the dx100 can be quite dry and sterile sounding. And the UI lags were also quite bad on dx100.

Remember that the DX100 sound used for comparison can be very different based upon the firmware being used.

Excellent point.

I'm not ready to admit that I prefer the sound of the 90 vs the 100 outright - however certain cans have better synergy (sigh, I hate that phrase), I prefer my W3000s with the 90. And as a whole package, price considered, I think the 90 is the no-brainer better option than the 100 - unless you positively must use it with hard to drive cans and no extra amp, which quickly raises the is portable audio silly question.

True.  I spend most of my DX100 days on 1.2.7... and was able to listen to a 1.4.2 lately.  I prefer the DX90 2.00 over these DX100 versions.  Don't have much experience with other DX100 firnwares tho.

Hello all,
I have had my DX90 for about a week now. Paired with my westone 4rs this DAP is truly amazing! The sound stage is huge. Deep and wide.
It really is a major step up from the DX50. I have to say that I find this player is really made to be used with IEMs. I have tried it with my HE-400s and HD-600s
and deffinitely does not have the power unless used with an external amp.

Regards
Jeff

Tha's too bad I was looking for a full size can and I kinda leaned towards a HD600 from reading reviews. What is your observation with using the DX90 with the HD600's?

Thats interesting... I find with DT880 600 ohm (sensitivity 96dbSPL/mW) at high amp it is loud enough...
Did a quick test for decibel levels using an iPhone app (by sticking the mic right on the interior part of the headphone speakers), I was able to get to ~105 db when I maxxed the settings on the DX90

Looking at HE400s (Sensitivity: 92.5 DB Impedance: 35 Ohm)
and the HD600s (97 or 102 db impedence 300 ohm)

I am surprised that the DX90 can't drive them to an adequate level..
imo, anything above 105db is just there to damage your hearing in the long run... just my 2 cents

I think it is well juiced. Good details and soundstage surrounding me. The dynamics are good too, however i am sick now so not much details can be given. High gain 190 is already good enough for me. (max 255)

Amping is not just a question of loud but also of control and reserves. The DX90 can play loud enough with almost any can on the market but might not be able to control them to the best of their ability

Edit: since some took my response seriously, I should state that my above remark was jokingly sarcastic...

I know I already posted this question in a different thread but this one has more "traffic"

I have a question for you guys, I have the option to buy a "slightly" used AK100 at the same price that I can buy a NEW DX90. Which one should I buy? I've heard the User Interface is better in A&K but how about Sound Quality ? is the difference that big to prefer a used dap over a new one ? (AK100 looks damn sexy to me ) Thanks!

sorry for OT: i think most of us here are well aware about loudness levels that can damage the hair cells of someones inner ear. most of the time this is a permanent damage. but what about people that already have a certain amount hearing loss, they might want to have it above 100dB SPL...sometimes^^. psychoacoustically some need those high volumes to enjoy* music which they would perceive as "normal" loudness levels. *of course, due to the damaged inner ear, the dynamic range is reduced.
