so here is my set up...akg k701 through either a heed canamp
or through a ppx3 slam, i love them but i want a secondary
set of headphones and i figured these should be a bit more
"fun". i read in a few other threads that the 990 05 version
is a good choice...so my questions are:
1) what is the difference between the 05 and 06 versions?
2) what would be the benefit of having them "woodied" later on?
and 3) would you suggest these or another pair of phones for a
fun sound at somewhere between $200 and $300?

thanks for any info you can give away.

The DT990s changed in 2005 which is why you see it denoted (typically). There currently is no difference with 2005+ models.

"Fun" is a pretty subjective term. Is there more bass presence with the DT990s? Yes. But I sold off my K701s because the Beyers were fairly similar and I didn't have a need for both. If you are looking for a complementary sound than you might want to take a look at Grados. I love my DT990 and RS-1 combination. I realize the RS-1s are out of your budget but you could look at the SR225s or perhaps Alessandros.

All true. Also, you cannot "woody" a DT990. Only the sealed DT770.

DT990's, for me at least, were much more "fun" than the K701. I respected the K701, but I never really liked actually listening to it. My DT990's get used every day.

i have a similar question about another pair of dt - dt 880? what's the difference btw the two, if any? and is the top 880 a 2005+ version and the other one is the older version?

The pics did not work, but the 05+ version is FAR superior to the prior version DT880 IMO. I did not like the earlier DT880 AT ALL, whereas the 05 version has enough bass to make it a very good all around headphone - competitive with the best.

Has anyone told Beyer there is a 05+ version? They seem to be under the impression that the successor to the 2003 is 2005 and they are still manufacturing 2005 only.

LOL!

All we meant is versions made in 2005 onward.

The DT880 "2006 Version" is a DT880 Pro like the DT880 Pro from 2003. The DT880 2005 Edition differs from these both. But only the housing changed. The 2005 Edition looks more modern. The sound of all these three DT880 is more or less the same.

Sorry, but the point was there is NO 2006 or 2005+ dt770, 880, or 990 in the Beyerdynamic consumer Premium lineup. The fact that some vendors started using such terms is confusing some people and misleading newbies e.g. the o.p. above into thinking there is something out there superceding the 2005 designation - and it's simply NOT TRUE for the three premium consumer models..............as to the Pro veriant - Beyer is considering it as a continuation of the pre-existing designation. They have not even chosen to call it a 2005, even though they DID change the "grill" to the shape of the consumer model, but having the 2003 headband, and coiled cable.

The colied cable is an option on the 2005 consumer "Manufacture" DT770/880/990, FWIW. I agree it can be confusing. There is certainly only one "new" version of the consumer line cans. Exactly what Beyer is doing with the whole "Pro" line isn't clear yet. There is a new Pro 880 just making an appearance, but so far the Pro 770 and 990 are the older style ones.

There is NO 2006 model. Its 2005 model, and that is what is still in production. Some American sellers use 2006 because thats the year when they hitted US market. However, that labeling is wrong.

Pro model should be same as their respective year-model counterparts, but with coiled cord and probaply higher clamping force (which also affects sound and comfort).

Sure a coiled cable is a "manufaktur page" option, as are other choices like ohm ratings - but year/model designation is what has become problematic to most prospective buyers and not too many of them are concerned with Manufaktur options. They are concerned with what is standard and want the most current model/version for their money. When one vendor decides to call what he is selling the 2006 version, and other vendors are correctly advertising their 2005 - what does the prospective customer do? There have been many threads and posts asking same question about 2005 vs 2006 Beyers as did the o.p.. Now, IIRC, Skylab is self-described in his bio as a "chief sales monkey" . What would such a marketing professional say in plain English?
When the Manufacturer makes one model with a singular year designation - a vendor or several vendors choose their own designation for that same model how is saying we call it XXXX because WE got it in XXXX - how is it anything but being totally disingenuous?

I don't disagree with you BushGuy. Since Beyer calls them "Edition 2005", so should everyone else.

Aha, Skylab we are finally in agreement. How about going a step further?
