Good afternoon..i'm not a Hi'fi developper or somethings like..but I know a bit OS...did you check if your OS runs Softwares in backgroud without loss of power ?
In short..for example in windows you have to enable processes in backgroud to run equal than other processes-- maybe this is why if in the system tray you will not have delay on playback.
just a thought..not a solution....

I am using E17 for almost one year.  Yet, I am not aware of the official E17 driver until now.
 
Installation on 64-bit Win7 is smooth and surprisingly, there is an improvement on the sound!
Besides, I can now hear sound from foobar and other programs at the same time via my E17.
