Just imagine the trouble that would cause you if it happened during a plane flight, both with other passengers and the authorities....

I love INQ, such a great site

I doubt a major news org is going to pick it up. It's not big news that laptops can explode and combust like that. That's the risk you run when you use LiON/LiPo battery chemistries.

Scary stuff.

I read a news story a couple years ago where a guy was using a laptop on a long flight, and actually had burns on his, well, you can guess where he had burns. Now, that is a whole new kind of pain.

Probably an XPS series model - I always suspected that to stand for explosive.

nanahachi: I love the INQ, too - but the person (Mike) even more than the site. He's a very friendly and humorous man - and great to have a beer (oh, ok, make that several beers) with and a cigarette (oh, alright, make that a pack of).

I'm just somewhat worried about his health ever since his heart troubles and surgery a few years ago...

That laptop looks like an inspiron 600m. I have one, and I remember that last year Dell issued a recall for the batteries within a certain serial number range, due to overheating I think. Maybe this one overheated enough to ignite?

Really though, on a plane it would be scary, but that's what fire extinguishers are for.

edit: I used 'recall' in two different senses in the same sentence!

PS: Oh and as for people burning their laps, the pervasiveness of the centrino platform means that most people can easily prevent this: just underclock the processor to its lowest speed. I have mine set to 600mhz when on battery power, the cpu stays at 34'C and the laptop doesn't even get warm, let alone scorching hot. Browsing the net, or doing word or power point works fine on a centrino even at such a low clock speed. Even the newer mobile athlons can do speed stepping, so people have no excuse (besides ignorance
