Wow...add an hd650 and you've got a poor man's he-1. :)
Funny you should mention this. I'm currently researching/shopping/considering either an HD800S or HD8XX. Trying to see if this "sticker mod" is a good thing or not!

I've owned the hd800S, twice. And I think it's an incredible headphone and a bargain price given the current market. I also like it on the Crack contrary to what some others say. Finally, I have an 8xx due in tomorrow so that I can decide for myself.

Definitely interested in what you think. I'm reading the HD8XX thread right now and it seems to be a 50/50 split on who likes the HD8XX better. I saw the response curves and can see how the tuning might be preferable to some.

Just an point of view HD 800 on a Crack imo does sound nice particularly if you have a few mods and some choice tubes. The Cravat is ultimately the Crack is going to be a bottle neck and limit what the HD800 is capable of delivering particularly in soundstage and resolution.

I would agree with this for the most part. While the hd800 traditionally sounds best on a tube amp (and does sound good on my BHC), these headphones make a notable jump in performance across the board with my solid state amp (Questyle cma Twelve).

That was pretty much what I was getting at the hd800 are enjoyable on the Crack but capable of a lot more than the Crack is able to deliver move up to Mainline and it takes the hd800 to whole different level if you have a good front end.

Can someone confirm the measurement on the base of how down the ledge is that the top plate rests on? I'm getting about 1/8" but it's tough to measure with a ruler.

Decided to make a custom base for the BHC over the break. Made from Ash and walnut inlay. Dovetail corners.
Nice!!! I had entertained the idea of doing a base in a figured wood like flamed maple or similar. Since I have zero woodworking skills, I chickened out. You my friend, clearly have skills.

Crickey, I have had my Bottlehead Crack since October ‘22 and realise I have not put up a couple of pictures. And reading some recent post's here I think the hd800s goes very well with it. I have a TOTL headphone amp too, and quite surprisingly I often reach for the Sennhieser’s with the Crack!

Beautiful build! What kind of wood is your case?

And I completely agree - even though I have "higher end" amps now, the BHC is always an absolute treat to come back to. Mine will forever be a permanent resident on the rack.
