My HD650 is more than 5 years old. If I could not exchange the pads, I would be forced to throw it away 3 years ago and buy a new one. My K701 was more than 7 years old until its drivers finally died recently.
I have some really old headphones like HP1000 and K501. Without proper supports I would not be able to use those a decade old headphones.

 
The 650 pads need replacing about once a year, it seems they are designed to flatten and collapse....they you can cough up $60 for a new set. The X1 pads seem very sturdy. But Philips is also a relatively new player in headphones, so if they sell lots of cans, they would eventually have to provide some sort of support for them.

I agree, the HD 380 Pro is a great headphone, I was genuinely impressed when I heard them. I plan on getting it as my full-sized closed-back pair whenever I get to that.

I had the 380 pro a couple of years ago.....they ain't much. Needless to say I no longer own them.

Definitely the P7 has the larger earcups. But still not large enough, they measure about 59mm long. You might wanna try the Sony 7520, which measures about 70mm long.

....in my opinion clearly in the same league as the top tier open headphones of today, and King of the portables.

Ironically, I just read a post over in the NAD HP50 thread from a Sig Pro owner saying the $300 HP50 sound better than his Sig Pros.

In that case I would say it can't beat my esw11 (!) Haha

I currently have the esw9, esw10, esw11, es700, and had the es10, ws99, es7.
Also Non- AudioTechnica models like:
Sony 1r, dt1350, Amperiors, etc.
Not to lower the greatness of these most popular cans individual sound,
but To me the esw11 is the tops in every conceivable musical parameter.
The problem is price, isolation, and limited production.
So for a great portable I could only recommend in good conciense:
Es700 ($150 or less!)
M80 ($114-189 amazon!)
I still neeed(!) to hear the kef m500 to know what level they are at...
But they are priced in a higher difficult market range where they would have to compete with alot of good cans...

I hear the m500 is superior to the momentums, but that is easy as I consider the Amperiors and dt1350 above them..
So that doesn't say much I guess my ears have to hear...

Dam.. Now I have the Nad hp50 to check out?.. As well as the kef and B&W p7

I now own a pair of these babies! Fantastic sounding and in my opinion one of the most beautifully designed headphones ever made. They do squeeze my head with a little too much force for my liking but that part may improve with use.

I have 5 or 6 hours on my P7's now, coming from Senn HD380pro.  I'm rather confused now.  Yesterday I loved my HD 380's.  Couldn't imagine anything better.  Last night when I compared them, they sounded very similar and I was scratching my head as far as what to do.  I came in this morning and listened to the P7's all morning with my NuForce ICON-IDO amp.  They sound great and are very comfortable.  Much more comfortable than my 380.  I just put my 380's back on after roughly 4 hours with the P7.  The 380's are big, heavy skull crushers by comparison.  And now I am looking for the blanket someone put over the tweater.  I think the 380 has a bit more bass, but suddenly the sound is muddy and muffled.  The P7 highs are much more vibrant, but not too sharp or bright.  The 380's isolate a bit better, likely due to the higher clamping.  I think I'm happier with a lighter clamp though as my ears aren't getting so hot.  There is still something to the treble in the P7's that is bothering me, but I can't put it into words.  Reading the glossary I'd say it sounds sibilent, like dragged out sss or ssshhhh, but it's in cymbals not in vocals.  Not sure what to make of it...  Overall after doing further A/B comparisons today, I like the P7 much more.  They are my first headphones north of $150 so I have a hard time knowing what is really good and what's not, but I'm happy.  Going to do some more comparisons and possibly go try out the Momentums at Best Buy again.  I wish there was someplace I could try out the Shure 1540's...

Nice honest impressions !

Hearing changes A LOT throughout the day. In the morning, to me, more detailed headphones sound much better since we hear better in the morning. Warmer is better at night. Music doesn't sound good to me at around 3:00.
