I'm looking to get into the audio scene and I was just wondering if there's any stuff i should take with a grain of salt when reading about audio equipment.

if there's already a post for this, feel free to tell me and link it

A lot of marketing language for audio equipment is embellished. It's hard to avoid since we're trying to convey what something sounds like or what benefit a piece of gear will bring to the table in improvement of that sound.

The Sound Science forum, down below, is a good place to look.

But no amount of science will dispel persistent myths. There are companies that act as if more drivers always equals better sound. There are great claims for exotic materials and technical-sounding vocabulary. And there are people who staunchly believe that incredibly expensive cables make an audible difference.

You'll need a very big salt shaker, but it's fun.

I would keep my salt shaker handy, if I were you. There's a lot of utter nonsense that gets posted and passed off as fact around here. I agree with the above poster that the Sound Science subforum is a good place to start. User Gregorio in particular is extremely knowledgeable, though he can be more than a little condescending if he thinks you're being disingenuous or making claims that can't be backed up.

Aside of the BS, it's very important to have a good amount of common sense. Some who lack in that, will add the $2500 ethernet audio cable in the cart and then complete the order. Or audiophile-graded ssd and motherboard.

completely forgot about that, yeah, even as a non audio man I could see from a mile away that it was hilariously a scam :)

basically ... a big part of the audio scene is largely about as "scientific" as reading horoscopes ... some exceptions excluded.

In that sense I take anything I did not experience myself and especially any "reviews" and such with a big grain of salt.

Whenever possible go try stuff yourself, bring your own gear to combine it with, bring your own music which you know to test it etc. etc.

Best of luck and sorry about your wallet :)

It ain't that bad to be honest. Affordable audio these days is really solid on sound quality in comparison to what we had say 10 or 15 years ago. That's a good thing.

In addition to that, the ceiling also went up significantly. I remember the time when Senns HD 600, AKG K701 and Beyers DT-880 were considered as top three choices and e-stats by Stax were super exotic stuff. Now Susvara is not shocking to anyone and the same story is with DACs, DAPs, amps and even cables. Considering this I wonder where this hobby will be in say 15 or 20 years from now.
