Sup all,

My friend recently moved to Chicago and asked for headphone suggestions to block out as much sound as possible.  Unfortunately, he has an unusual fear of anything in his ear, so that rules out iems.  All my headphones are open or iems so some suggestions would be helpful.

So, in summary...
1. He cares more about blocking sound out than sound quality.
2. He doesn't want iems.

Also, I suggested Senn 201s, 280pros and AKG k271s to him.  He asked me which one blocks out sound better, and I don't know.  Do any of you know?

The HD 280 Pro were designed for professional monitoring and blocks out external noise better than the HD 201. You and your pal may also want to consider the HD 25. Otherwise, for a step up from the HD 201, you can check our HD 418 - 448 series.

I have an HD280 and it's scary how much noise it blocks out. I can't hear anything around me when I'm listening to them which makes them my "study can". They can be uncomfortable for extended use though as they have a lot of clamping force. You may also want to check out the M50. I hear it has a little less isolation than the HD280.

What kind of budget are you looking at?

For isolation: Senn HD280, Beyer DT770...

If that is the case, I suggest to consider active noise cancelling solutions.

I've had the DT770, K271 and K81, and I am familiar with most other closed cans, but the blocking difference you get from noise cancelling is amazing, far beyond the HD25 sort of HPs. I don't know the (more expensive) Sennheiser solutions, but the Audiotechnica ANC7 is a really fine piece of gear.

another finger for HD25´s....

One guy, in some review (unfortunately, I don´t remember where), make a statement about passive blocking of out-side noise of this babies at level somewhere around 30 dB. I think, pretty good for non-IEM´s. I agree with him, I have HD25 C-II and IMHO, I see this noise-blocking (canceling) somewhere exactly in this level...30dB or even more-hardly I hear or barely understand If or what people talk about around me. And of course, If I turn my music on, I am in "my own music heaven".
