Currently looking for a closed headphone that can serve as an all arounder like my HD 650.

My current shortlist includes:
Shure SRH 940 (worried about lack of mid-bass and comfort / build quality)
AKG K550 (top choice at the moment)
AT A900x  (have a pair of AD 900s kinda want to try a new brand's sound)
Sennheiser Momentum (same issue as the A900x)

I listen to trance (primarily), rock, rap, classical, and more.

I already have Pro 900s for bass, so I'm looking for a more even sound to function as a generic go to when I can't use the HD 650s due to sound leakage.

Do you guys think the K550s would serve well in this respect? Or should I be looking in another direction?

Consider the Mad Dog. Quite neutral, good bass, nice mids and fairly smooth treble. I'm finding them very enjoyable with Rock and electronic myself. The soundstage is pretty good for a closed.

The amp you use for the HD 650 would may be good acceptable for them.

The AKG is good for a closed in that price bracket, but has seal issues with smaller heads. I didn't like it much for hard rocking music due to a lack of body so to speak.

I have heard that people have issues with getting  a good seal with the 550, so I'd put them on the try before you buy list. A Denon D2000 or D5000 would be the right way to go.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.
I saw the mad dog mentioned a few times but didn't give it serious thought because of the mod-ish nature of it, I'll give it a closer look now.
I considered the D2k / D5k when I was buying my Pro 900s, partly because they were said to rival the 900s in the bass category. So, I scrubbed them from the list early on this time around since I'm looking for a more neutral / slightly warm sound. I also heard they have leak issues which would be a problem in this case.

I have a decently sized head so I wasn't worried about fit issues w/ the K550s, should I be?

the KEFs are looking pretty impressive. I'm a bit leery about the on ear design, but they've currently supplanted the K550 at the top of my list. Is leakage an issue with them?

Thanks for the help.
Decided to go with the PSB M4U 1 in the end, should get them later this week!

I am in the same predicament.  The A900X seems like the best choice for me at the moment, but the lack of bass presence seems like an issue I wouldn't be able to tolerate.  After viewing this thread, the A900X is no longer the the shining candidate as the Kef M500, PSB M4U 1, and Mad Dog have broken their way into the spotlight.  Does anyone have any light to shed on how the A900X would compare to the headphones mentioned??

A helpful Kef M500 review seen on Amazon that compares many relevant headphones:

Yeah those last three are all fantastic. The a900x doesn't lack in bass though.

KEF is superior to IMO:
momentum
1r
Fidelio l1
ATH WS99
Focal Spirit one
a900x
k550
etc.
