Chord Hugo TT High End DAC Amp Impressions Thread

just picked this up and I'm loving the DAC, but the light is... rather bright to say the least lol

is there any benefit to always leaving it on, or am I good to turn it off once I head off to bed?

There is no right answer. Some will say yes, whilst others will say no. The DAC may sound slightly better after being on for an hour or so, but you may not notice any difference. Try leaving it on for a day, paly a track you are familiar with, and see what you think. Then, turn it off at night, try the same track the next day from the powering it up, and see what you think. Based on your results, you can answer your question.

cheers for this, honestly speaking can't notice a difference so I think I'm just gonna turn it off and save some energy!

in other news, I've noticed that on fixed line output it occasionally just blasts static noise. I've read that it's something to do with USB cables, but this can't possibly be the case, I'm using a Supra cable which is pretty good quality. could it be the iFi iPurifier I use as well? in any case I've switched back to variable line output as I didn't experience the issue while I was on it. interested if anyone else knows of or has experienced the same issue

I have lost the handshake with roon rarely and have to reboot roon remote on my computer to my server. My fixed line out auto set craped out and I do it manually now on tt reboot, no big deal. Concerning power I leave mine on 24/7 except when we leave the house, in case an extended power failure and the super caps get drained.
I don’t think the hand shake loss is cable related.

interesting, although I have had the issue happen to me when I've switched back to fixed line output manually myself. I've bought a usb to optical output just to troubleshoot further, but will definitely keep your suggestion in mind. cheers!

You won't be disappointed :)

I would argue that it's 'better' than TT2 and even Dave. (Yes I owned all of them, just saying from a time perspective)
OK. Can you explain why it is you feel this way? The TT does seem to strike a nice balance between musicality, detail, tonal balance, and time domain. I had a TT2, and whilst it is technically more advanced, the TT is damn enjoyable, both as a stand alone setup and a DAC to a high quality headphone amp.

You already answered it yourself

I think that I remember someone posting, but it is probably on the MScaler thread if you search (the TT thread receives so few posts nowadays).
I did. Definitely not worth the money (you will find photos and my posts in the m scaler thread), no way, save money for headphones or something different.

I use HQPLAYER to upscale to my TT at 384k. My first mscaler was for an H2 but of course I tried it with the TT. HQPlayer provided more bang for the buck. My second mscaler is with my TT2 and easily betters HQPlayer with it. The TT is a fantastic dac and while not quite the detail of the TT2 it’s warmth can be listened to for hours.

Finally got around to wiring up the Digital Break out Box so that the Coax can output to either the speaker amps or the Chord TT. SACD's sound incredible with the DBoB.

Also, have been experimenting with outboard headphone amps from the TT. Although the TT headphone amp section is very good, I'm finding out that external headphone amps may be a further improvement to the TT performance. Tried a tube OTL headphone amp with the TT, and on classical music, the OTL fed from the TT bettered the headphone amp in the TT. There is a slight reduction in brightness, a bit more tonal richness with OTL, and a perceived sense of better clarity. I would reckon this could be headphone dependent. The headphones used is the Ultrasone Edition 15 which I think is 40 ohms at 94 db.

Will be trying out a Aurouasound HEDA headphone amp very soon. Will post an update once I get a handle on the overall performance.

So, who uses a external headphone amp with the TT, and who uses the internal amp?

I've only ever used the TT with an external amp in Aune S17 Pro. there is admittedly a massive retail price differential, so maybe I'm bottlenecking the TT's performance a bit, but I use neither 3.5mm or 6.3mm jacks and have no intention of using either :p

the Aune s17 pro provides almost a tube-like sound despite being solid state, and I've really enjoyed it with the TT; I think it pairs really well. I previously used iFi Zen DAC and of course there was a massive difference and improvement, with sound becoming a lot less digital, more lifelike and many veils being lifted. greater resolution too!

for me though, the biggest noticeable difference has been adding a DDC to my stack and using coax input. i had one too many instances of the TT USB input handshake being lost and having white noise blasted through my ears! adding the Quloos QU02 DDC returned the depth I felt like I lost after temporarily using a cheap usb-c to SPDIF optical adapter
