Can the Alessandro MS1's sound great w/o an amp?

absolutely ... but it will sound better with most dedicated amps. The biggest difference when you add an amp to the MS1, SR80, SR125, etc. is more bass and less distortion at higher volume levels.

Agreed, I just got mine today and they sound great. But, I don't have them at high volume.

Yes, amping them refined the highs a bit but more obviously, gave the midbass/bass more punch and impact. It made what is already good about them better.

They still sound good without an amp though.

^ Yep, Grados aren't really hard to amplify. That doesn't mean they don't benefit from amping but they sound great unamped.
