I'm about to take the plunge but just need to ask 1 more question. It will be used with a Cowon S9, so I hope it will drive them properly.

absolutely ... but it will sound better with most dedicated amps. The biggest difference when you add an amp to the MS1, SR80, SR125, etc. is more bass and less distortion at higher volume levels.

Agreed, I just got mine today and they sound great. But, I don't have them at high volume.

Yes, amping them refined the highs a bit but more obviously, gave the midbass/bass more punch and impact. It made what is already good about them better.

They still sound good without an amp though.

my cowon d2+ drives them fine so there should be no problem with your s9; the ms1s are easy to drive.

and to confirm, yes they sound better out of an amp.

Pretty much agree with everything that been said the same also applies to the MS1i as well as the MS1 Ive owned both.

I found I got more from my MS1 by using a better source (DACmagic) than I did by amping it via my 3move/iPod.

^ Yep, Grados aren't really hard to amplify. That doesn't mean they don't benefit from amping but they sound great unamped.
