Beyerdynamic DT 150: Bloody Brilliant!

After demo akg k242 for a few days I got to say it's fine for movies but it's not a headphone to enjoy music. Dt 150 is simply a better headphone )

maybe the 242 is more suited for classicals

A matter of taste I guess. It sounds very dry airy and light. I want more body and more attack. More depth and a longer decay...

But I did liked 242 with movies , easy on ears and detailed neutral tonality and comfy...

the 681evo i had was  an open can, u talking about that?
...generally bright thin sounding...u might need to mod it to get some heft in the bass.

the k550 ihad...is a toss when it comes to fit...cos of the huge cups... If the fit is good u get the bass.
highs are good too, Might be alittle peaky in the upper mids.  Soundstage is eliptical..deeper to the front
than left to right.. lobesided to my ears :p

DT150 is more wholesome , mellower/slower, and still carries a punch.

If u prefer clearer/brighter kind of presentation, then go for the yamaha mt220

i would argue dt150 has more clarity in midrange than mt220.  Wouldn't call mt220 cleaner or brighter either.
t220 compared to t150, to my ears are - Tighter lowend , faster ( short decay) punchier , more attack , snappier , stronger more aggressive dynamics.

I would say treble on mt220 is more rolled offfff than on dt150... no way mt220 is brighter than dt150 , simply faster and punchier , with really tight lows... and less sugar in the mids.

i heard AKG line  , lots pf headphones ... and i would say AKG lacks in punch and depth , it simply doesn't have the drive , the energy... that headphone should have if sacrifice lush mids and liquid sweet sound for bright treble end detailsssss.

AKG is neither energetic or lush , its simply very polite and boring sound signature 2my earZZzz

Go with dt150 man, you won't be sorry , and if you don't like dt150 you don't deserve to have ears!

Good news after my last week with ATH-R70x. If you want an open back DT150 - go with R70x - very similar, but sound is more clear, but same fullfilled, deep, with authority and 3D presentation. Extremely comfortable. And completely non Audio Technica flavoured. Great AT studio model ! !

Yes, the Sextett is by far my favorite AKG, plush and detailed, very reminiscent of the DT150 with more air and separation, the modern ones (240s) are not even in the same ballpark.

Thanks! You just saved from having to get the dt150 :)

Wow. Just had a strange experience. Listening to John Lee Hooker "Sings the Blues", where he's playing acoustic guitar only throughout the album (okay CD). (If you like the blues, you should own this album.) I always assumed that the DT150 were the best headphones (or really good) for this album because it is so driven by vocals. BUT, going back and forth with my AKG K501s and the DT150s, I actually settled with the K501s.

This album has very light percussion, bass, acoustic guitar, and mainly vocals. In relative terms:

DT150: better vocals and bass, but WORSE percussion, imaging, clarity, acoustic guitar, and soundstage than the K501 on this. You might say, well, on a vocal blues album I want better vocals. But the difference is quite subtle. They're both very good in vocals, like 10/10 vs. 9/10.

Chain: Denon CD player, optical RCA out to audio-gd DAC 19 (10th anniversary), to Lehmann BCL on +10 gain.

so DT150 and HD650 have similar sound signature? K712 will be different?

Both headphones are dark sounding with some bass roll off. However The dt150 Imo doesn't have the lush relaxed tone the 650 has. While not as open sounding, the 150s are clearer and more holographic while still being quite musical. Them vocals are very good

As for me I'm not really using the dt 150s much with the he560s for at home use and the hd 26 pros for on the go. But that's mostly because I have some seal issues with the pads. but that should be resolved once I get my zmf pads.

I've owned all three, and the K712 is definitely the most different of the three, notably brighter, leaner, and airier. In regards of the DT 150 vs HD 650 they are similar overall, but the HD 650 definitely has an inherent lushness the DT 150 doesn't have. The HD 650s mids envelop you with warmth and the DT 150 is more like a clear bell with its mids. The HD 650 is smoother sounding while the DT 150 is more holographic sounding.

K, what about your Hawk VS HD650?
I miss the old times when I could enjoy the HD650, I don't use it nowadays, could the Hawk remind me of the old days when I could tolerate the HD650 as a audio listening device and not a grainy mess?

The Nighthawk pretty much takes many of the best aspects of both the HD 650 and DT 150 and improves on them. After spending time with the Nighthawks, it make all my other headphones sound grainy and off. It's more akin to the HD 650 of the two with a richness, warmth, and smoothness throughout the sound. I don't know why the HD 650 have a tendency to sound gritty on a lot of systems. I don't think I'll properly enjoy the HD 650 unless on something like the bottlehead crack so I recently let it go. I think the nighthawks can remind you of those days, it's a darker and more euphoric sound like the HD 650, it has a bit more emphasis on the bass and much better sub bass than the Senns and slightly less forward in the mids. It's actually kind of unique sounding and I found it takes some time to appreciate and settle in. The nighthawk is much better than the HD 650 in terms of soundstage and coherency. The headphone has ridiculously low distortion and you can hear it.
