You can't go wrong with the SRH-840. Beyerdynamic DT-770 or ATH-M50 can also be had for $100 if you can find them on ebay or CL. I've had all of them before and I love the Shure the most but others might go for the Beyer. It's really up to your personal preferences and the types of music you listen to.
I'm leaving my Shure at home now that I just got a Custom One Pro (lighter, more comfortable, looks absolutely cool). You might want to save up for a DAC/headphone amp down the road.

A lot of people will tell you different headphones based on THEIR own liking, but it all comes down to what the person you're buying it for wants.

Seeing he's 12, im assuming he's leaning towards a bassy sound. I'd say the CAL! would be good, but if you want something cheaper maybe try the JVC HA-S500's. Fun, bassy sound, very durable and portable.

good luck

SRH840 is too expensive.. i can buy it but i dont feel like wasting 200$ for headphones...
and i can maybe look around for shops but still, i dont think it gonna be 90$... its gonna be 200\150$... still too much
