hey everyone i think iv convinced my friend to step up his "audio set up" (five dollar ear buds) to some decent headphones! i hope that maybe this will introduce him into the audiophile world perhaps. iv been think of recommending him a mdr-v6 (mainly because that was my first decent headphone) or a grado but i don't know really. i want to hear some other people opinions on the matter 
 
he listens to  progressive rock, ambient,jazz/jazz fusion and some experimental electronica.

I like a nice soundstage with jazz, and I feel the lower end grados are not going to give you that. Some very different music genres so I would say an all-arounder would do best. IMO the MDR-v6 is a great suggestion. 
 
The grados are open, so not the greatest for portable use,  but if I was to suggest one I would say the alessandro ms1:

Again though the mdr-v6 is a classic IMO and is so for a reason. Get them with they beyer pads though.
