I'm just putting togather an order for Amazon.ca and need one last piece of advice from the music fans on head-fi. I heard a piece of solo violin by Bach on the radio and really liked it. I didn't catch the piece's name only that is was by him. It might have been his sonatas and partitas for solo violin but I'm not sure. In anycase, I'm sure I'll be happy with any solo violin pieces by him; it will be a much needed change after owning four versions of the cello suites. What performances should I be looking for?

IMO, Podger is the best, followed by Milstein, followed by Grumiaux.

In 2006, violinist Gidon Kremer released J.S. Bach: The Sonatas and Partitas for Violin Solo for ECM's New Series. Maybe this helps…

Rachel Podger is very good indeed, as is Gidon Kremer. I would go for Podger as her's really is a life affirming set of performances - a classic recording I will venture to suggest...

Viktoria Mullova's recording of the Bach Partitas is again available from Philips in a 2 disc set which includes the violin concertos. The partitas are first class and should not be missed. While the concertos are (imo) better than average, the price of the 2 cd set is the same as the oop partitas alone so that the concertos make a nice "freebie."

NB: Although it's not solo violin, her recording of the sonatas with Ottavio Dantone is also a top choice.

Btw, her recording of the concertos does have its fans, but I was never completely happy with them. A better choice is the recording by Kuijken and La Petite Bande.

Speaking of Kuijken, his recording of the Sonatas & Partitas on Deutsche Harmonia Mundi is also quite fabulous!

I also place a vote for Fischer; you may also want to look at Lara St. John, although her album may be harder to source.
